This can happen when a message was deleted by your
antivirus program, but WM's database was not updated to reflect
that deletion.
Windows Mail seems to be overly sensitive to corruption from
antivirus programs, and is definitely incompatible with most
McAfee and Norton antivirus programs. If you are using either
of those latter two, it is best to uninstall and replace with a
more compatible antivirus, such as the free version of Avast:

Another solution is to upgrade to the less buggy Windows Live
Mail:
