Windows Mail, Vista, "Message number 1 could not be retrieved."

I have a new computer with Windows Vista Home Premium pre-installed.
The mail system is Windows Mail, which replaces Outlook Express. I use
a spam scanner named Spamihilator, which I have used for several years
on other computers, and for the past several weeks on this new one.

There have been no problems with my emails before this morning. This
morning I received an error message from Spamihilator:
"Spamihilator encountered a problem and needs to close. We have
created an error report: C\Program
Files\Spamihilator\spamihilator.exe.dmp. It contains a small memory
dump and log files of current session. Please send this report to
errorreport@spamilhilator.com."

I did a Search for this file and could not find it. Then I started
receiving this message from Windows Mail:
"Message number 1 could not be retrieved. Account: 'Mail', Server:
'pop.att.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR problem
retrieving message.', Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error:
0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800420CD"

I have done the following:
-- disabled Spamihilator
-- disabled AVG anti-virus
-- checked email account settings
-- ran Mail with all different combinations of the above
-- Searched the Internet for a solution, but found nothing usable for
my case.

So how do I either get rid of the error message, or fix the problem
causing the error? I do not leave any messages on the Yahoo server.
My DSL is AT&T/sbcglobal.

I will appreciate any help you can give.

Don't just disable Spamihilator, uninstall it.
Then use the webmail access that your provider has, and delete the
problem email from there.

Re: Windows Mail, Vista, "Message number 1 could not be retrieved."

Gary,

Thanks for your help. But I uninstalled Spamihilator, then rebooted,
and still got the same error message.

You wrote:

I read that to mean simply run Windows Mail as normal without
Spamihilator. Which is what I did. But have still been unable to find
the problem email.

I failed to mention that I had previously turned off the email scanner
on AVG earlier today when I started getting the error messages, but
that made no difference either.

Thanks again.

Almost all mail providers these days offer a URL you can use to access your
mail with Internet Explorer. This is called Webmail.

Webmail access is simply a URL you go to with a web browser (like
Internet Explorer), where you can access the mailbox your provider
has assigned to you. In your case, just go to http://mail.yahoo.com
and log in with your primary sbcglobal.net address and password.

Re: Windows Mail, Vista, "Message number 1 could not be retrieved."

Thanks, Frank and Gary.

Not being very knowledgable, I didn't quite know what to do with
Frank's response, but Gary clarified it for me:
" . . just go to http://mail.yahoo.com
and log in with your primary sbcglobal.net address and password."

It wasn't precisely what I did, but it certainly pointed me in the
right direction. I will outline it here in case someone has a similar
problem. I actually went to http://yahoo.sbc.com/dsl. My problem
wasn't on my primary email address assigned to me by sbcglobal, which I
never use. It was on one of the two sub-accounts created by me. But I
checked all three accounts.

Strange problem. The email which caused the problem was sent to me by
my granddaughter, and was one of three that she sent me yesterday
morning. The other two were delivered with no problem.

You guys are great. Thanks for your help.
