Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection. Beside that,
McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail.

If you are not willing to just ignore them, the only way is to delete both
copies of the database (which does not contain the messages, but only
references to them) and let WinMail rebuild it.
First close WinMail, then use Task Manager to make sure there are no
instances of it under applications or processes.
Then click Start | Search | Advanced Search
Check the box to include non-indexed, hidden and system files.
In the Name field type WindowsMail.MSMessageStore and click the Search
button.
It should show you two copies. Delete both of them and re-open WinMail.

Re: can't delete from inbox
So I had this same problem. Now my Windows Mail is a major mess. Every time
I open up the program, it creates a new "Recovered Messages" folder, named
for the date it was c reated and I think the time of day. Each "Recovered
Messages" folder has 5 sub-folders. It is really bogging down my systtem.
Any ideas?

Re: can't delete from inbox
Drag the messages to the folder you want them to appear in and delete the
empty folders. It isn't hard. Next time, just ignore non-deletable
messages in any folder but the Outbox, where WMUtil will delete them.

Re: can't delete from inbox
That's why I tell people NOT to do what Frank suggested. I think its better
to move the entire message store to a subdirectory under Documents and then
once WinMail works, then use File | Import | Messages to get the messages
from the moved store. Otherwise people are continuously experiencing this
"recovered messages" issue.
