Put the 'Preview' button on the toolbar, via Rt click>customise toolbar.

Then toggle back and forth as required.

Re: Preview Pane in Windows Mail
So far, this is the best advice I've seen on how to use the Preview Window
most of the time, but NOT when viewing the Deleted Items folder. I certainly
do NOT want to have to preview deleted messages.

Does anyone know any way to set this permanently, rather than having to
toggle on and off the Preview window numerous times a day when I delete mail?

Re: Preview Pane in Windows Mail
You can delete messages without the message going to Deleted Items.
Shift + Delete
Yes to permanently delete.
