Go...
Start Menu > Default Programs > Set Associations
Wait a short while for the panel to populate itself with the list of file
types.
Page down to the particular file type for the attachment.
Click on the file type that concerns you.
Click Change Program button.
Select the program you wish to use to open the attachment.
If you are in doubt about which program to choose for a particular
file type come back to this forum and let us know which ones
and we may be able to advise you on a suitable program.

Hi hikat,
Which file type are you trying to open from Windows Mail?

Re: unable to view email attachements
hi Julian your help got me into the right bit but then I got confused. I
clicked on the file which was relevant then clicked on "change" and the thing
I clicked on appeared but when I went back to the email to open it it keeps
coming up with the same message as before. Should I be chosing some other
type of file instead of same type which is on the attachement eg, a pps file
which the wee picture corresponds with pps microsoft powerpoint
presentation, this is just an example of one even though I cannot open
acrobat either.
I hope that this makes sense to you.

You should be choosing the same file type as the attachment.
Ensure the "Always use the selected programto open this kind of file" box is
ticked.
for a .pps file type ensure that you are using
Microsoft Office Power Point Viewer as the
associated program.
Presumably you do have Office and Acrobat installed correctly?

This did not work for me. I followed the instructions to the letter but
nothing changed.

Re: unable to view email attachements
hi folks thanks for responding,,,
well when I go to default and then choose the same programme eg pps
microsoft powerpoint slide show I click on it and ask to change programme and
then it thinks for a while, comes up with another box headed "open with"
recommended programmes and it can give me the powerpoint slide show as an
option or realplayer which I can browse ok or cancel and I always choose ok
then go to open the attachement in my email again but nothing works it is the
same message. I don't want to phone microsoft because I am worried that I
might have to pay for them to help me. Sorry it took so long to reply to
your help but was birthday yesterday so out and about.

Re: unable to view email attachements
Opening attachments within Windows Mail is problematical.
Just save the attachment to your hard drive, then open the
file from there.
