I have replaced Norton with Avast as recommended but have noticed
a marginal performance loss, slightly slower in reading posts, and
am wondering if there is anything I need to know about default
settings? Should I change anything?

I also note that I appear to be scanning email but can't see how to
disable it?

I don't use Avast myself, so I'll defer to someone who does
to answer your question.

I use Computer Associates free antivirus:

Ah yes... I forgot about that.

CA huh? That's a blast from my past. When I was an MVS sysprog we had
a mass of CA products running... ACF2, CA-1 etc.etc. something like 30 0r
40,
and they all had about half a dozen bloody manuals all with the same
blue ring binders...

An absolute nightmare.

right click on tray icon, select stop provider and then select Outlook/Exchange. I believe will do it.

Actually Outlook/Exchange shows no activity but Internet Mail indicates activity
when I read a Newsgroup.
