Windows Mail keeps closing because DEP is closing for security
My Windows Mail stops working when a certain message is trying to be deleted.
It is telling me that the Data Prevention Protection has closed the program.
I've run Nortons 360 so I don't think it's a virus.

Chances are, the Windows Mail problem will go away after you uninstall Norton.

Re: Windows Mail keeps closing because DEP is closing for security
I would like to ask that an MVP weigh in on Gary's constant advice to remove
Norton. Norton is one of the most popular (and possibly the biggest)
antivirus program in the world and I wonder why he thinks that will cure all
evils. Is it true? Is Norton not useable with Vista?

I don't use Norton on my Vista machine (my wife uses it with no problems on
XP) so I don't know. But, if it is not compatible, or is problematic with
Vista then that fact should be widely broadcast. If it is a legitimate
product to use with Visa, then someone should say so.

So, I guess my quesiton is. ..... is anyone able to use Norton AV without
problems on Vista? Many of us would appreciate hearing from you so we can
get an idea about what the facts are.

Thanks,

Tom

It's good advice.
Norton and McAfee are not compatible with Windows Mail. They also slow down
Windows itself and cause other problems. I refuse customers who won't give
them up.

Re: Windows Mail keeps closing because DEP is closing for security
It has been very clear for years that the email scanning feature of Norton
damages OE and should be disabled at the very least. Now, there are many
many reports in this NG that WinMail has stopped functioning or some aspects
of WinMail's functionality are not working (e.g. saving attachments) and
that uninstalling (not just disabling that feature) results in restoration
of those functions.

See www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

The MVPs in these NGs have been recommending for years that users disable
the email scanning (its completely redundant and breaks functionality) at
the very least, and with WinMail, its becoming increasingly apparent that
neither Norton products nor McAfee products are compatible with WinMail, and
they should be uninstalled and replaced with less invasive AV software.

Re: Windows Mail keeps closing because DEP is closing for security
Ok Guys (Gary, Steve, and Frank), thanks for the info. I just wanted to be
sure. I guess I am happier now with my Kaspersky AV that I have had for
years .... and I believe it does scan my emails in and out.

Thanks again,

Tom

Re: Windows Mail keeps closing because DEP is closing for security
You can use Norton and Windows Vista together and in fact I am doing so.
However you cannot use Windows and Norton firewalls together. One of these
must be disabled.

Incidentally a very large number of popular products such as Oracle 9i and
Microsoft's own SQL Server 2000 are not compatible with Windows Vista.

SQL Server 2000 will not install in Vista because it is a server-based
product. It is not compatible with XP either.
