Have recently bought a preloaded VISTA pc, and when I open Windows Mail for
the first time upon turning on the PC each day, I get messages such as the
following:
Message number 3 could not be retrieved. Account: 'pop3.blueyonder.co.uk',
Server: 'pop3.blueyonder.co.uk', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR The
requested message is no longer available; it may have been deleted.', Port:
110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800420CD
I can find no way of retrieving the lost email, not even by going to the
webmail service; by the time I go there, the mail has been lost completely.
The strange thing is, that once Windows Mail is open and I've got past these
initial error messages, it does not prevent any further mail coming
through - everything comes through just fine. Seems the only way I can
avoid getting these error messages is to keep the pc on 24/7 with Windows
Mail open. But this is not eco-friendly and is also a fire hazzard
particularly as my computer room is situated in my loft. I want to be able
to switch it off every evening without losing email.
Can anyone tell me how to avoid these error messages, and how to prevent
losing further mail.
Are you sure you are actually losing messages?
The error "The requested message is no longer available;
it may have been deleted" is coming from the server, and
is in response to a command from your mail client to
delete a certain message which has already been deleted.
The question than becomes, why is your mail client issuing
this erroneous request? I can think of two possibilities:
1. Your antivirus program may be messing with your mail.
Temporarily uninstall the antivirus program to see if that
clears the error.
2. Check your advanced settings: Tools > Accounts >
double-click the mail account, Advanced tab, in the bottom
section (Delivery) is anything checked?

Well, I've checked the Advanced settings and nothing is checked under the
delivery option. So that just leaves the antivirus program. I will
uninstall it and then reinstall it and see if I have the same problem
tomorrow when I turn the PC on.
Many thanks for your suggestion.

Be sure to do the Windows Mail test after uninstalling your
antivirus and rebooting, but *before* reinstalling the antivirus.
Also, if your antivirus is McAfee or Norton, read http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3
and I'd suggest replacing it with a less troublesome antivirus.

I'm sorry I don't know what the Windows Mail test is - how do I instigate
this?
Thanks

I simply meant for you to try out Windows Mail (put it through
its normal paces) *before* you reinstalling the antivirus program.
It sounded like you were planning to simply uninstall and immediately
reinstall your antivirus program without any intervening trial.
