Windows mail error message - IE 8?
I have a BT Yahoo Premium Mail account for email, which I view on my laptop using Windows Mail. Everything has been working smoothly for months until last Friday morning, since when I have been unable to send or receive emails using Windows Mail (my BT Yahoo account is still working fine directly on the webpage and via blackberry). The error message I am getting is:

The host 'mail.btinternet.com' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account: 'mail.btinternet.com', Server: 'mail.btinternet.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

As I said, everything has been working fine for ages and I have not changed any settings to cause this error. The only explanantion I can think of is that we were away on holiday for a week, the email worked fine on the first evening of our return, but the followiong morning when switching on there was an automatic update which, I think, installed InternetExplorer8. It is the only thing I can think of to explain the sudden change. Even more curiously, while internet access has remained 99% fine I cannot visit any Microsoft website!! Each time I try there is an error message! Has anyone experienced a similar problem and can anyone help with the solution?

Our Broadband is not via BT as we are in the deep country and there is no ADSL here, and no cable either. Instead we have to use a domestic satellite internet arrangement (Tooway modem).

Many thanks

Does uninstalling IE8 resolve the behavior?

How to uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 8
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

Did anyone have access to your computer while you were away?

Did you recently switch from BT dial-up to the satellite provider?

Re: Windows mail error message - IE 8?
Thanks for responding. I used the System Restore tool on the PC (HP) to restore to the point before the update was installed on 26 June, but this did not resolve the problem. I have not tried to uninstall IE 8 as this was only a guess on my part - I do not know what other updates might have been included and could have triggered the problem.

My 18 year old son had access to the PC while we were away, but Windows Mail worked on my return and only stopped working the following morning during which time only I had access to the PC.

We have been with the satellite provider for 6+ months and have never used anything else on this PC - BT was unable to provide internet service over our phone line, so we did not strictly switch from one to the other but rather gave up with BT (our provider in our previous home) and installed the satellite equipment.

Do you recommend uninstalling IE 8? Will we still be able to access the internet, since currently this is the only way to receive our emails?

Many thanks,

Re: Windows mail error message - IE 8?
Sounds like a DNS lookup error.
Replace mail.btinternet.com with pop-smtp.bt.mail.yahoo.com.
If that doesn't work either, replace it with 217.146.188.192.

Re: Windows mail error message - IE 8?
Gary - brilliant, that's fixed it. Many many thanks. Is there any way I could have known or found this out myself? I feel a bit helpless because I don't understand what the problem was in the first place or how it arose and therefore don't understand the solution either! Would it now be safe to accept the IE 8 update in the future?

Cheers,

Nick

Gary:

Having the same issue:

What would I try with the following:

Account: 'mail.mchsi.com', Server: 'mail.mchsi.com', Protocol: POP3, Port:
995, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC19

Thanks,

Re: Windows mail error message - IE 8?
The problem with Windows Mail attachments experienced by
some who installed IE8 is not widely known outside of this
forum. The exact cause is not known at this time, but
Microsoft is investigating it. Don't accept future offers to
install IE8 until you read here that it is safe to do so.
One permanent solution is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail:

Re: Windows mail error message - IE 8?
I don't think your mail server supports port 995.
Go to Tools, Accounts, select that account, Properties, Advanced,
then change port 995 to port 110. Click OK.
