What anti-virus application or security suite is installed, is your
subscription current, and is it supported in IE8? What anti-spyware
applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?
Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed
IE8?
Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?
Just asking for now!! Do NOT use such a Restore Point yet!! => Do you have
an available Restore Point which predates the install of IE8?

10% of my brain lives with me. The other 90% can be found here:
-- IE8 was installed with Vista when I bought the machine last month.
-- I'm using Live Mail
-- I'm using AVG 8 as my anti-virus
-- I'm using the standard Windows firewall
-- Norton may have been installed on the computer when I got it -- don't
remember; if it was, I uninstalled it immediately
-- Additionally, I've gone to Live Mail Tools,Options,Security and selected
Internet Zone for security zone and "Block images...." is unchecked

Please try to avoid replying to your own post(s), Fred. Thanks.
Did you disable AVG prior to installing IE8?

IE8 was already installed when I bought the machine. I added AVG later.

OH, RATS. I just figured out what I'm doing wrong. And, to maintain a little
pride (very little), I'm not going to tell anyone. Almost 30 years of using
these things and I still do stupid stuff.
Thanks everyone for the help. But I apparently need a mental health
professional more than anything else.
