Welcome to the Club!
This meanwhile is a "known issue" which affects many system, although
obviously not the majority).
Tons of postings in the "vista.mail" NG (to where I X-post this).

So far the reason is unknown and there is no fix. Only remedies:
- uninstalling IE8;
- a workaround reducing the problem to certain file types (mainly JPG
and TXT).

As you say "some attachments": Which kind of attachments can be opened?

Which error messages for those not being operable?

Rainald

Re: Windows Mail Attachement Problem and Adobe Player Problem with IE8
Thank you for your prompt reply. I have just worked out what IE8 is!!! I am
not very Computer literate I'm afraid, and I am really getting bogged down
with the difficulties of Vista when I was quite happy with XP. But then to
change back.......how much hair would I have left in the process!!!!?

As far as I know it is only pdf files that I can't open. I have had other
attachments which are OK. The message says
"This file does not have a programme associated with it for performing
this action. Create an association for it in the Set Associations control
panel"
We have spent a lot of time hunting but haven't managed to find the 'set
associations control panel'?

That error message is not caused by IE8. Apply this fix:

I have a similar problem, except IE8 doesn't open any email attachement
(jpg, xls, doc, etc). The application usually loads, but a message indicating
that it can't find the file then appears. However, as with the other writers,
the file can be opened by saving it first. Thanks Rainald for your comments,
at least i am not alone.Looks like we will have to wait till Bill gets this
problem sorted.

Re: Windows Mail Attachement Problem and Adobe Player Problem with
Dave, yours is the issue that can be resolved by uninstalling IE8.
Without uninstalling IE8 you can make it work for all but TXT and JPG
attachments by doing the following:

Right-click on the shortcut that you use to open Windows Mail.
Select Properties. In the field labeled 'Start in' change the entered
value to %UserProfile%. Click OK. Restart Windows Mail and try opening
attachments.

Re: Windows Mail Attachement Problem and Adobe Player Problem with
Thanks Gary, however that command was already in the "Start In" field. I
cleared and retyped it in but still no success.
I suppose that i will uninstall and wait for a fix.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Have had Norton 360 for a couple of years and were running in the background
during installation.

Re: Windows Mail Attachement Problem and Adobe Player Problem with
I thought that might have been the case.

No-charge support for Internet Explorer 8 installation, set-up and usage
(only) is available via the phone based on your locale through 31 December
2009. Customers must be running Windows XP or Windows Vista in a non-domain
environment.
=> US & CA Residents: 1-866-234-6020
=> Other locales: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...px?&prid=13043

My personal recommendations include:

=> Install IE8 manually, not via Windows Update/Automatic Updates!!

=> Uninstall all third-party toolbars (e.g., Google; Yahoo; Windows Live)
and third-party Windows Themes before installing IE8.

=> Close all open applications (i.e., anything with a taskbar icon) before
installing or uninstalling IE8.

=> I would strongly recommend disabling your anti-virus application and any
anti-spyware application's "system protections" (other than Defender's)
before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade. If you're running a
third-party firewall, I would recommend disabling it and then enabling the
Windows Firewall before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade.

=> Create a Restore Point manually before installing IE8. [Do NOT use
System Restore to remove/uninstall IE8; instead, see
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700. Then use the Restore Point prior to
reinstalling IE8 per these recommendations. Norton users will need to see
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/symantecdoc1.html.]

=> Reboot twice after installing or uninstalling IE8.

=> For best chance of success with IE8, make certain that your anti-virus
application, any anti-spyware applications (other than Defender), and your
third-party firewall (if any) are supported in IE8 Final before you decide
install it.

Yes, it's just the "normal" way the IE8-WinMail is playing with us :-(
:-(

De nada. I'm just suffering too.

Looks like we will have to wait till Bill gets this problem

Yes, we have to wait and either uninstall IE8 or - in case one can live
with only JPG and TXT files being affected - use my workaround (as
posted by Gary in his reply to your posting).

Good luck.
