Re: Windows Mail attachments won't open after installing IE8
Never mind. After toggling a few things in Default Programs, without effect,
I restarted Windows Mail, and now I can open JPG attachments!
I still don't think my issue was the same as what the others have been
reporting.

I think I installed the final release of IE8 over the top of IE8 RC, so
one thing I might try is to uninstall and reinstall IE8.

Gary, was Windows Mail running in the background when you installed/upgraded
to IE8 Final?

Re: Windows Mail attachments won't open after installing IE8
I don't recall exactly, but chances are good that Windows Mail was running
when I installed IE8 because I almost always have it running.
However, the issue is moot for me now because attachments in WinMail
are working fine after I toggled a few settings in Default Programs, and
then restarted WinMail.

Re: Windows Mail attachments won't open after installing IE8
With all due respect, the widely-advised & -accepted practice is to close
all open applications (i.e., anything with a taskbar icon) prior to
installing a Windows Update, a Service Pack, or an IE upgrade.

My personal & professional recommendations also include:

=> Uninstall all third-party toolbars (e.g., Google; Yahoo; Windows Live)
before installing IE8.

=> Disable your anti-virus application and any anti-spyware application's
"system protections" (other than Defender's) before installing (or
uninstalling) an IE upgrade. If you're running a third-party firewall, I
would recommend disabling it and then enabling the Windows Firewall before
installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade.

=> Create a Restore Point manually before installing IE8.

=> Reboot twice after installing or uninstalling IE8.

=> For best chance of success, make certain that your anti-virus
application, any anti-spyware applications (other than Defender), and your
third-party firewall (if any) are supported in IE8 Final before you install
it.

It's a really strange thing. And what's worst is the fact that things
are so erratic.

Re: Windows Mail attachments won't open after installing IE8
Hi PA Bear,

risking that you might again reject my reply I take the liberty to point
to the situation on my side:
As said before: One of my 3 affected computers is almost "virgin". After
a fresh install if Vista Business 32 from scratch and immediately
installing SP1 and SP2 I did not install anything except "Total
Commander" prior to installing IE8.

So none if the problems you mentioned could have existed on my system.

Re: Windows Mail attachments won't open after installing IE8
Here's what I did:
Open the Default Programs applet, then click on "Set program
access and computer defaults." Expand the Custom selection, and
select Windows Mail. Click OK.
Repeat the above for Internet Explorer.
There was no improvement until after I restarted Windows Mail.

Re: Windows Mail attachments won't open after installing IE8
I understand what you're saying, and that's what I would do as a workaround
if a new program won't install. But let's face it, the average user is not
going to take those precautions. A well-written installation routine should
not be bothered by other programs that may be running.

Thanks for the reply, Gary.

I did that numerous times on all my affected 3 machnies.
It does not change anything. :-( :-(

The question niw is: How can we make the developers at MS aware of the
problem?
Would you and/or PA Bear inform them?

Rainald

Microsoft doesn't listen to anyone when it comes to Windows Mail. They have
their own agenda, and Windows Mail is not on it for any purpose.
