No, this is for Windows Mail, the client that comes included with Vista.

Yes. Even resetting this in Default Programs has no effect.

It affects all attachments. The typical error message is
"The file could not be found. (C:\windows\system32\...)
It's as though something is pointing to the wrong location for
temporary files.

Re: Windows Mail attachments won't open after installing IE8
I had a short discussion with a WM/IE8 user that
is NOT having the problem with attachments. He
changed no settings, everything is out of the box
(so to speak). Except for his setup.

I still use IE7, so here are his words:
"I seem to remember that, during the early stage
of the setup process, a dialog box appeared inviting
me to allow IE8 to set all default values for everything
including the toaster: there was the option not to do
this, and that's the way I went."

It affects all attachments. The typical error message is
"The file could not be found. (C:\windows\system32\...)
It's as though something is pointing to the wrong location for
temporary files.

I can confirm this.
And IMO it's only too natural that WinMail's trying to place temporary
files *there* fails.

Re: Windows Mail attachments won't open after installing IE8
Windows Mail uses temporary folders for images. Has
always been the Internet Explorer cache. So if this is
the error path, (C:\windows\system32\filename.doc)
then it should not affect opening image attachments.

It does affect opening the files of attachments, however.
When a link (shortcut) is used for starting WinMail where for the
directory to run WinMail some other place is specified (f.e. %TEMP% or
%UserProfile%), then most file-types can be opened without a problem.
This is not only my own experience, it was confirmed by another user in
the German vista NGs.

I stay with my assumption that IE8 someway does some harm to the
locations for storing temporary files.
