Re: Windows Mail Slowing down over past 2 days
After using the 'weird's Calendar open/close, I don't see the 'mark as read' delay. Not any different than in prior OE use. I use the keyboard shortcut, the tool bar message read buttons, or catchup.

Re: Windows Mail Slowing down over past 2 days
That's the mystery Rob..

Nothing was changed here beyond the routine changes that happen for most(avast, defender etc definition updates). The delay in my case appeared about two weeks ago.
I've disabled all Avast functions and Defender to rule those out..even completely uninstalled AV, turned the firewall off, etc..to rule out possible causes. You'd think something would be evident as the cause...nada.

Is the problem related to using Calendar? I've never even opened it and
never seen the slowing problem.

Yes...Rob, it is not a permanent fix.(Calendar has to be opened on each
instance of opening Windows Mail). It remains intact until Windows Mail is
closed.
Why this works is still a mystery.

The slowing problem appears to be rare. I've never experienced it
on three different Vista computers.

Re: Windows Mail Slowing down over past 2 days
This 'bizarre weirdness' as its been labeled remains a mystery on the relationship between the two(mail and calendar)

Maybe more will become available..who knows it could be a unique situation common to a piece of hardware or software.

As you have proven, it is not universal machine to machine. As far as this end. Two machines so far:
Both are Micron.
Vista Ultimate RTM 6000, Vista Pre-Release 5840
Both have 2GB RAM
One has an Nvidia Geforce 7900, the other Geforce 6200
Both Pentium 4(3.2 Ghz, 3.0Ghz) with Avast AV, Office 2007, Acronis True Image and Disk Director, Sun Java JRE6 and Windows Mail Compact Tool. Identical Sony DVD-RW drives, identical external USB WD same model/capacity drives, identical MX700 usb logitech mouse, and microsoft ps2 multimedia kb.

Networked(hard cable lan 1 and lan2) to a dlink di-624 wireless router and motorola surfboard cable modem(wan), and networked hp printer.

No other differences than noted save the RTM is installed in a dual boot with XP Pro.

Feel like guessing? ...I gave up..just suggesting the possible fix when appropriate.

Re: Windows Mail Slowing down over past 2 days
I believe Winston, myself, and others who are experiencing
these similar problems that are "cured" by opening and closing
Windows Calendar, have eliminated an AV as the culprit. An AV
may be the cause for some users, but not for us.

I don't mean to sound rude, Gary, but as I have said numerous
times- I have tried all the suggested things. I've been using Vista
since June. I'm not an "average" user, and from reading Winston's
posts, he seems quite knowledgeable, too. My point- an AV being the
issue was the first thing I checked into. I'm sure Winston did the same.
Obviously, you are just trying to help. However, it should be clear from
our posts, we've jumped through all those hoops already.

More than anything else, it's just aggravating that such a pitiful
product was released. Vista has been in development for so
many years, and when you upgrade, things are supposed to
be better. As of right now, Windows Mail is *not* better than
Outlook Express. I feel the neglect is intentional, as the development
team has spent most of their time on WLMD. Perhaps, an attempt
to push users towards that adware crap.

I am using NOD32, by the way.

Take care,

Michael

Bugs such as this are very hard to reproduce and consequently fix. But
there are several others that could be fixed, if effort were put into it.

Your second last paragraph hits the nail on the head.

Re: Windows Mail Slowing down over past 2 days
I'm really not a Microsoft basher... I'm just a bit underwhelmed by
Vista and I am amazed that Windows Mail was released in such
poor condition. Yes, I use Vista full-time now and I think it's as good
as XP. But, it should be more than "as good as XP". The real "wow"
was going from Win98 to XP. Yes, there were problems then, too.
But, going from 98 to XP was moving to an entirely new code base,
and when the masses make such a move, there's going to be problems.
All of us can look back and say, it sure as hell was worth it.
Moving from XP to Vista is not the same. It's not like Vista's code
base is brand new, it's not. So, after all these years in development,
being born from the solid code base that is Windows 2003 Server, and
"$6 billion" later- we have an OS that is "as good as XP" and a mail client
that absolutely blows. After the "unprecedented" beta testing that went into
Vista- I feel like we are still beta testing. Vista should be better than it is.
Microsoft has so much talent, so many resources... I find it hard to believe
this is the best they could do.

http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/m...ves/110256.asp
On the time and money it took to develop Windows Vista: "Best $6 billion I ever spent. You
don't need to feel bad for us in terms of the profitability of the Windows business. Did we
learn? Yes. … It's pretty exciting to see how the things we learned will let us do even
better."

http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/wi...it-s-here.aspx

"Thank you to everyone in the community (more than 5M testers) who contributed to making this
the best OS we've ever released!" -Nick White

http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/wi...facturing.aspx

"You gave us unprecedented support in testing and providing your feedback while we designed,
developed and refined Windows Vista -- so much so that it has in many ways become a reflection
of your involvement." -Nick White

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/09/te...e7fb&ei= 5070

The test data from the second beta release of Vista alone generated 5.5 petabytes of
information — the equivalent of the storage capacity of 690,000 home PC’s.
