Windows Mail has its own spell checker. Try Tools | Options | Spelling.
Tell it to use English even though its already set to.

I’m aware of that but it is also the automatic capitalizing of the first word
in a sentence and grammar checking that I’m looking for.--

One way would be to create a document in WORD, then save it to disc.
Attach the doc to a mail message...or, if its format is appropriate,
paste it into the message body.

Well, you can create a Word message and then save it as filtered html and
then create a new HTML message and use Insert | Text from File and choose
htm format and then choose the file.
