my email attachments cannot be opened

I've been in the middle of a job search and I'm getting replies from
prospective employers that they are unable to open my attachments (which
happen to be my cover letter and resume). Can anybody tell me what I have to
do in order for them to be able to open the attachments?

What created the attachment? We will need the program name
and version. A common problem is Word 2007 which (by default)
uses the newer .DOCX format. You can use Save As to force
Word 2007 to use the older "Word 97-2003" format.

What format are they in (.doc, .pdf)?

If you're using Word 2007, perhaps you're sending them in the new .docx
format, which can't be opened with older version of Word until they install
the Office Compatibility Pack for
the new 2007 formats...

Or, try saving your docs in the older version (2000/2003) format.
