Why can't I send email via Windows Mail? (Vista, wifi user)
Why can't I send email via Windows Mail? (Vista, wifi user)
I have recently been experiencing problems sending emails thru Windows mail.
My Compaq laptop is new and it uses Windows Vista. I work in sales, therefore
traveling is part of my job and I always rely on Wifi. This problem recurs
esp when I try sending emails to different email addresses like yahoo, gmail,
etc. I don't experience this problem when I directly use my provider email
website or when I send email to people using the same provider. Here is what
pops up when the message/s can't be sent:
The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.
The rejected e-mail address was 'DGorges@FalconWaterfree.com'. Subject 'Re:
list of restaurants and chambers of commerce', Account: 'Work Mail', Server:
'smtp.eastern.com.ph', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '554 5.7.1
<DGorges@FalconWaterfree.com>: Relay access denied', Port: 25, Secure(SSL):
No, Server Error: 554, Error Number: 0x800CCC79
I have tried applying the suggested solutions in the different threads and I
can't seem to make any work for me. I esp don't understand the part about
"Port 25"??
If anyone can give me a detailed step-by-step answer, that would be
fantastic. Just let me know if you need anymore information to help resolve
this problem.

PS
I tried clicking the box for "This server requires a secure connection
(SSL)" in my outgoing mail as per one of the advice here, this is what came
out:
Subject 'Re: list of restaurants and chambers of commerce', Account: 'Work
Mail', Server: 'smtp.eastern.com.ph', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '250
DSN', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 250, Error Number: 0x800CCC7D
Another solution would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

In Windows Mail, like Outlook Express, you cannot send email if you are not
connected to your ISP.
This is done to prevent complaints of spam and referred to as "relay mail".
If you use WiFi connection from a public location, you are connecting to
another ISP, not your ISP.
However, if you go to your ISP's web mail site, you then can read, delete,
reply or compose new mail using your ISP server.
As a general rule, the owner of the SMTP server must match the
entity providing the Internet connection.
The available workarounds are as follows:
1. Use webmail for sending (via your browser).
2. Ask your home ISP if they have a port other than '25' for SMTP.
3. Substitute the SMTP server belonging to your away-from-home connection
This is not practical if you use many different connection providers.
4. If you frequently send from multiple locations, get a free Gmail account,
configure it for POP access, and use it for your sending chores.
Gmail uses port 465 for SMTP, which is not blocked like port 25 is.

Re: Why can't I send email via Windows Mail? (Vista, wifi user)
Big thanks Gary, I just have one more question regarding #4. If I go ahead
and use Gmail (which I have already) for my sending chores, does the
recipient of my mail see my work email address or my Gmail address?
