Gmail does not use port 25 for SMTP. Please change your Gmail account
settings as specified by Gmail:

Gary,
I am having the same issues as Rod is/was. Mine tells med the same thing
When trying to send emails it does not send but goes to the outbox with the
message " the connection to the sever has
failed.Server:'smtp.gmail.com',Protocol:SMTP,Port: 25,Secure(SSL):No,Socket
Error 10060,Error Number: 0x800CCC0E
I am using a Comcast.net email address and have been using this mail for
about 6 months with no real issues. Today, I can not send my mail. My wife is
having the same issue on her laptop. I can send emails from the webmail
protion through comcast, so its on Microsofts end I would think.
thank you

Re: cannot send emails
Read the same response I gave Rod (below).
Gmail requires specific port settings as specified in their instructions.

Re: cannot send emails
It gets confusing when you copy someone else's error message.
Thanks for now including yours.
Comcast has been in the process of switching all their users to a different
SMTP port number, apparently without notifying their users adequately.
Use these new instructions:
<http://help.comcast.net/content/faq/How-to-configure-Windows-Mail-for-Vista-to-use-port-587-for-sending-email>

Re: cannot send emails
Gmail states to use port 465 or 587 for SMTP and 995 for POP . Tried those
but still couldn't send mail, still goes to outbox and stays there
Thanks

Re: cannot send emails
Did you pay attention to the other changes mentioned besides
just the port numbers?
You may need to click on the Outbox, then either move any
messages you find there to the Drafts folder or delete them.
You may be required to disconnect from the internet to
do this. If any still refuse to do either, download and install
this hotfix, with Windows Mail not running:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090
Although it's labelled as for mail stuck in the Outbox, it also
works in other folders. If you aren't sure whether you have
a 32-bit version of Vista or a 64-bit version, try the hotfix
for the 32-bit version first. Some common antivirus programs,
such as most of those from Norton or McAfee, tend to
cause stuck messages and other problems in Windows
Mail, although seldom immediately, so if you have such a
program, remember where to find the hotfix, and hope it will
install again if you need it again. A recent version of the
Trend antivirus program also causes problems in Windows
Mail.
The Vista SP1 update includes this hotfix and more, but
takes longer to install.

Re: cannot send emails
Please post the error message you get when using port 465 with SSL.
I don't think you have 'stuck' messages in the outbox because the error
message you got indicates a failure with the server connection.
