WINDOWS MAIL CRASH

Hello again,
refering to my IMPORTING FOLDERS AND MESSAGES FROM OUTLOOK EXPRESS article,
one extension:
I tried several times to fix the problem with Windows Recovery, it didn't
work out.
Every time I start the WM application, I have one try to click on the Local
Folders with the result that only the Inbox from the drop down menu will be
opened, everything else is invisible - or all the folders from the drop down
menu are shown in the right window (still not shown in the left one), but
without any function. After that the next click shows no reaction.
How can I restore my previous WM functionality without restoring the
complete OS
and loosing all files on HDD?

If you don't quote your previous article, many of the frequent responders in
this newsgroup use methods of reaching this newsgroup that make it
difficult to go back to your previous article, and therefore are likely to
have
trouble giving useful answers.

Interference from antivirus programs tends to cause an assortment of
problems in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately. What if any
antivirus programs do you have, and have you ever had a Norton or
McAfee antivirus program on that computer, even a trial version?

As the problem still exists, is there a way to recover the functionality
of Windows Mail?
To point out again, as I had a lot to do with finding the proper
updates for my old version programms, I would likely avoid to
format The HDD. Any help?

Your response do far looks like a good temporary fix.

However, in order to make the fix more permanent, you'll need
to uninstall the McAfee antivirus program, and then run this
cleanup program to take care of what the uninstall often fails
to clean up:

After you both follow the directions in the response you already received
and finish the cleanup above, you may even need to remove your mail
account under Windows Mail, then restart Windows Mail and add the
account again.

If this solves your problem, you may want a replacement antivirus
program that doesn't cause such problems. Most versions of the
Norton antivirus program and a recent version of the Trend antivirus
program are bad choices; they also cause problems in Windows
Mail. I recommend either avast! or AVG, either one with a custom
install where you tell it to leave out the parts that scan email.

To see the imported messages, you may need a few changed settings.
If you don't see a folders list in the left pane, click on View, then
Layout. If there's no checkmark in the box before Folder List, click
on this box, then Apply. Click on OK.

If you don't see the toolbar containing View, press the Alt key.

If you see the folders list, but without the usual folders under Local
Folders, click on the triangle or + sign in a box to the left of Local
Folders.

Tried out everything suggested so far, with results: NONE
Chronology:
1) uninstalled McAfee
2) downloaded and ran the cleanup programm
3) removed my mail account
4) found message store path and deleted manually the previous imported folders
5) followed ALL the instructions from
http://www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx#oe2wm and tried again to import my OE6
messages; got the message "YOUR MESSAGES WERE IMPORTED IN OE6 FORMAT", but
nothing showed up when I launched Windows Mail; in the message store were
just the old folders imported, but not the messages, and even this folders
doesn't appear in WM
6) tried to create some new folder in "Local Folders", everything is going
fine to the last step, but the new created folders doesn't appear even if
everything is declared as OK
7) in the left pane are visible only "Local Folders" and "Microsoft
Communities"; when I click the triangle in front of "Local Folders", only the
"Inbox" shows up, NOTHING else, and even this folder is empty
8) I doublechecked all settings, everything is chechmarked as it is supposed
to be

So, to point it out again:
Right now my essential problem is not HOW TO IMPORT MY OE6 MESSAGES,
but HOW TO RESTORE THE FULL FUNCTIONALITY of Windows Mail?

Step 4 was probably not a good move, since using Windows Explorer
to alter WM's data file structure will result in hard to repair corruption of
WM's message database.

Your best bet at this point is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail:

I heard about not bad application-'recovery Outlook Express'
(http://www.recoverytoolbox.com/outlook_express.html), this tool have
next features: extracts and saves the user's messages from files with
the dbx extension that Outlook Express uses to store folders, messages
and news on the local disk, read and view information stored in .dbx and
.dbt files (including corrupted dbx files) and any other.

Windows Mail does not use .dbx files, and Outlook Express won't run
under Vista, so it isn't clear why you are recommending such a program
in this newsgroup.
