no automatic recipient addresses
Under vista I no longer get an address or selection of possible addressees
after typing in several characters of the recipient's address. I was told
previously in this forum that this would happen after I entered the
addressee's name three times. I've done that many times over and still no
auto recognition. What's up?

RE: no automatic recipient addresses
Apparantly it only remembers the last 29 addresses. On my W.M it only seems
to remember the last 29 that I reply to. Therefore some will drop out to make
way for the latest ones that you reply to. Not like good old Outlook Express
where it remembered all the contacts. That's progress for you!!!!

Re: no automatic recipient addresses
Again, if that limitation is a deal breaker for you, Microsoft has
a solution: upgrade to Windows Live Mail.

It may be a stupid question but what is Live Mail? Why should I upgrade to
it? How much does it cost?

Re: no automatic recipient addresses
It's a similar desktop email program, and it's free. It's the apparent
replacement for WM, as WM has not been updated in over a year. In addition
to POP & IMAP accounts, WLM can also access Hotmail.

Re: no automatic recipient addresses

If you have the names and addresses in your contacts folder, you need
only type in the name (or even part of the name). Hit the send button
and if there is more than one person by that name, WM will do the spell
check (if turned on) and then offer a list of possibilities (if there is
more than one possibility) to choose from.

Re: no automatic recipient addresses
In addition to what Dave said, WLM has many more features than WM:

Real-time spell checker (like in Outlook, it marks typos immediately
with a red squiggly underline).

Auto-correction of commonly misspelled words (changes 'teh'
to 'the', and 'i' to 'I').

Better auto-completion when typing in recipients.

Contacts group feature is more flexible.

Re: no automatic recipient addresses
Windows Mail doesn't use the contacts list for completing addresses.
Instead, it uses a separate list of the last 29 addresses you sent
messages to. This list is very hard to edit; it's easier just to send
messages to the 29 addresses you want on the list.

If you'd rather use the contacts list, start a new message as usual
but don't type any part of the address. Instead, click on To:.

Re: no automatic recipient addresses

I just made a fake name and address in contacts (jim frank with a fake
email). I typed jim f in the to line in WM and when I hit the send
button a box popped up that offered all the jim f's including the new
one with the correct fake address. I have an old version of Outlook on
the computer, but the fake name is not in it, so obviously it does use
the contacts folder.

Re: no automatic recipient addresses
Then you're getting a response different from most of the people who
post here. There's a possibility that having some version of Outlook
helps.
