Antivirus vs. Windows Mail
Since Norton and McAffee and perhaps the latest version of Trend do not work
with Windows Mail (based on informative response provided by Frank Saunders -
thank you, Frank), which A-V programs are compatible?

Re: Antivirus vs. Windows Mail
If you mean they do not intergrate with Mail, there is no need since the
apps you mention all have real time scanning

The ones usually recommended here are avast! and AVG, either one with a
custom install that tells it to leave out the part that scans email.

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff

We're less familiar with the others that cost more for home users,
but many of them work with Windows Mail if you leave the part
that scans email turned off.

Re: Antivirus vs. Windows Mail
Unfortunately, part of that real time scanning, probably the email scanning
part or scanning of .eml files, causes assorted problems in Windows
Mail occasionally.

Re: Antivirus vs. Windows Mail
Thank you for your reply. Guess I should have provided more info.
WMail stopped sending messages yesterday. (SvcPk 1 installed and Norton
upgraded.) Incoming mail is OK, outbound doesn't work. Ran through
diagnostics with ISP - smtp & pop servers are OK - ISP webmail works fine -
TimeWarner says leave "authenticate outgoing" box unchecked.
Frank said Norton should be removed from my machine because it doesn't work
with WMail. If that is the case (he also said McAfee and newest Trend do not
work with WMail), then what AV program can I use that works with WMail?
Thank you for helping me understand my options.

Re: Antivirus vs. Windows Mail
After uninstalling the Norton program, you often have to run this cleanup
program to take care of what the uninstall left behind:

<http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039>

You may even have to remove your email account under Windows Mail,
then restart Windows Mail and add the account again.

If you have the Google Toolbar installed, it's a good idea to uninstall it
too.

If this cures your problem, you may want a replacement antivirus
program that doesn't cause such problems. I recommend either
avast! or AVG, either one with a custom install that tells it to
leave out the part that scans email.

Re: Antivirus vs. Windows Mail
After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like:
AVG free edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
or
Avast free edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

With either of those, during the install phase you must select custom
install, and then deselect the email scanning option.

Re: Antivirus vs. Windows Mail
I know for a fact that Avast! works with Windows Mail without any problems.

Re: Antivirus vs. Windows Mail
I leave in the part for email scanning and don't have any problems in Avast!

Re: Antivirus vs. Windows Mail
Email scanning adds to the possibility of email database corruption.
Sometimes you get lucky and nothing bad happens for several months.
