Mail not seeing the WORKING connection

Mail refuses to use the current broadband connection - the vista home
pc was using a usb modem and working fine - this has been completly
removed. the broadband connection using router has been install.
Internet work fine, but Mail - when you send/retrieve it pops up window
asking to select a dialup connection - their are no options to choose
b/c their are no connections.

If you click Set Up A Connection- it then says A internet connection
is already connected click here to suft web which if clicked goes and
surf's

As a temporary get round ive installed thunderbird which works fine,
but I want to return to mail - especially as i have hundred of previous
emails within it.

Any help very much appreciated
