Winmail does not close as it should and subsequent problems.
I am running winmail build 6.0.6000.16386 with vista ultimate. Since first
installation of vista, Winmail has never closed down properly when exiting
the program, Either from clicking the X box or from File Exit. Next launch
of the program results in waiting for something to occur that never happens.
A quick visit to the task manager usually finds the winmail process running
from before with a new process trying to run alongside. Ending the process to
both of these and re launching the program will allow the program to start
but this is a nuisance to have to carry out every time. I used to notice this
same problem occured in outlook express particularly when a send/receive had
been launched and the program closed whilst this was happening. Though this
no longer seems to be a requirement. Furthermore this never occured in
Outlook. Only in express.
I now am experiencing the same trouble many others have of 1 specific
undeletable message stuck in the outbox that means I cannot send any email at
all and now have to use webmail to carry out email activities and not use
winmail at all.
Attempts to go back to a rather old copy of outlook I have results in Office
unable to find a windows address book, which I guess is a change within
vista. Hopefully the engineers of Microsoft can find a way through before too
long. Meanwhile the search is on for a vista compatible email program. Any
comments are welcome but I suspect this will have to wait until a cause is
identified.

Make sure you don't have antivirus software set to scan email. That seems
to be one of the major factors that is contributing to these issues. See
www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

You can reset things by either deleting both copies of the
WindowsMail.MSMessageStore files or by moving the entire contents of the
Windows Mail directory to another location.

Re: Winmail does not close as it should and subsequent problems.
Hi Steve, many thanks for the suggestions. I have disable antivirus scanning
but as regards clearing the problem, I presume clearing the files you suggest
will delete all my existing emails in all folders? this presents a slight
problem as some are related to a legal matter. Unless oyu can suggest a means
to delete the single email in the outbox that is causing the problem. Also it
would be helpful to know where to locate the files you suggest removing.
Thanks.

Re: Winmail does not close as it should and subsequent problems.
The location of the message store can be found via Tools | Options |
Maintenance | Store Folder. Also see www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx

If you have important messages, then you should back them up on a regular
basis. Your hard drive could fail and you'd lose everything.

If you delete the two database files, then your messages will be unaffected
and will automatically be reincorporated into the message store and new
database. If you move everything out of the Windows Mail directory, then
your messages will move with that and you can then import from the location
to which you moved them.

In neither case will you lose messages.

You can also try setting up a second instance of your Mail account and then
delete the first instance and that might get rid of the outbox message, but
otherwise there is no other resolution at the moment.
