Windows Mail - send SMTP size limits?
error message with incomplete email upload
I am using Windows mail with Vista ultimate set up for an upgraded Yahoo!
mail account which uses SMTP for outgoing messages. I can send up to a 20Meg
attachment from the Yahoo! site. If I send a message having a 15Meg
attachment, or smaller through Windows Mail it doesn't complete uploading. I
use Verizon DSL.

"Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Subject 'whatever', Account: 'pop.mail.yahoo.com', Server:
'smtp.mail.yahoo.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '451 timeout
(#4.4.4)', Port 587, Secure(SSL): No Server Error: 451, Error Number:
0x800CCC0F"

I can't solve this one. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

The size limits are set on the servers, not on your machine. If you need
a larger file, you may need to upload it to a site that accepts such binary
files, then send a pointer to the file's new location instead of the file
itself.

Thanks for the reply but it is a hair beyond me. Should I be enquiring
Yahoo! about what their servers accept? Thank you, this has been very
frustrating to me...

That would help you know how much you can send directly on Yahoo.
However, note that attachments expand somewhat as they are encoded
for email, so you might also want to add yourself to the address list of a
big message to find out how much it expands.

Re: Windows Mail - send SMTP size limits?
Three comments.
You are pushing the limit of what the POP3/SMTP protocol was designed
to handle. Look into other methods for sharing large files.

Your port settings are different than what Yahoo recommends. For SMTP
use port 465 with SSL, see
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mai...op/pop-14.html

Time-outs are often caused by your antivirus scanning the emails. Turn
off all email scanning.

Re: Windows Mail - send SMTP size limits?

Hi!

Much has been said already anyway. But I want to add a bit more.

Attachements are usually sent MIME Base 64 encoded, which makes them
on average 37% larger than the file itself.

Your 15 MB file becomes, 20.5 MB all of a sudden. Over the limit as it
was
already pointed out.

*As a courtesy I never send large attachments*, unless requested
explicitly. I'll try to keep email size well below 100 KB.

Think about hosting your large files, which you have to share
frequently, on
a Web server, but preferably on a FTP server.

All you need to do than is to send a link via email.

I felt like answering this one, because I just had an issue with
a friend who wanted to send me a 1.5 MB attachment. She's on a slow
dial up connection and her outgoing mail server would time-out during
the
transmission. Of course, he said, "... Your email is not working!" That
drove
me mad, you know.

Hope that helps
