Easy Transfer Wizard
I want to use 'Windows Easy Transfer' wizard to transfer solely emails and
contacts from XP OE6 to Vista Home. Nothing else.
a) Can I pick this alone, with the wizard ?
b) If Yes, How ? -- I don't find a choice to transfer only emails and
address book.
c) If No, what is the alternative ?
Thanks for any help.

I'm not familiar with the transfer wizard. However, here a way to transfer
just Outlook Express files:
<http://www.askmehelpdesk.com/email/import-dbx-files-outlook-express-windows-mail-vista-86458.html>
<http://www.vista4beginners.com/Migrate-from-Outlook-Express-to-Windows-Mail>
For the contacts, bring along the .wab file. After you copy the files to a
directory
on your new computer, but before you import them into Windows Mail, make
sure
the copies are read-write instead of readonly.

Re: Easy Transfer Wizard
Easy Transfer allows you to make custom selections, but the
categories are not all that clear. I believe the email stuff is under
Communications.

Re: Easy Transfer Wizard
I am writing this as a "reply" only because I don't want to start a new
thread because it really is the same topic.
I bought a new laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium. The old laptop has
Win XP. I ordered a Bellkin Easy Transfer Cable tonight, and when it
arrives, I hope this transfer will be easy. But before I knew about the Easy
Transfer, I had already saved all photos, all files and all Outlook Express
emails onto Flash Drives.
But the more I read about what and how the Easy Transfer Wizard transfers
the stuff, I am seriously considering putting all the stuff BACK on the old
computer and let Easy Transfer do it. I say that because I read somewhere
that there often are other bits of files or whatever connected to the stuff I
saved that I would not have on the Flash Drive.
I think this ETW is meant to transfer all the things it says it will.
Several of those things are on Flash Drives. I think that the Wizard will do
a more complete job of transferring things over the way they should be.
In case there is a problem, I will still have it on Flash Drives as a back
up. What do you think?

Re: Easy Transfer Wizard
Sahara,
Looks like you're almost there. At this point you still have options and
things to consider. With ETW some configurations are preserved and you data
files will be moved. Or, If you want to add to your new system, you need to
copy over your old data files to wherever you would like them to be and
perform you own new configs. Now, how complex of a system do you have? By
that I mean, weigh how much time it is going to take you configure e-mail,
network access, some preferences, etc all by hand or have ETW do it. BTW,
ETW isn't perfect. It's going to miss some things maybe....no, likely.
My recommendation at this point would be, configure your own system and move
you files over with you flash drive. That way, you will refresh (in your
mind) all the things you did and you won't be copying "bad" setting
characteristics over. How proficient are you with system settings, if above
average, set them yourself. If not go ETW.
Just my thoughts...as you asked. Now that I think about it. You are not to
far from completion and anyway you go you will likely succeed. A good
position to be in.

Re: Easy Transfer Wizard
Bob,
I do not know anything about configuring settings. Thatis why I always shy
away when there's an option to do something as Custom. I wouldn't know how.
How complex a system do I have? I am not sure what you mean...Are you
referring to my old PC, my new PC or my digestive system? :-) Serious..I
don't know what you mean.
I want to do it the easiest way possible of course. I want to put one end of
the cable in the old PC and the other end in the new Vista PC and push a
button. That's why I am considering putting all the files, photos and email
messages back and let this $34 cable do what it was designed to do. My files
are just simple files. I trust the cable knows what to do. I hope it doesn't
ask me choices that I won't know how to answer in the middle of this process.
There is one thing that I am going to have to do and I hope it is just a
matter of plugging it in. I have a Netgear Router with an encrypted IP. My
stepson walked me through setting that up on my old PC. To make things
possibly more complex (but maybe not) I also have Vonage. I am hoping I can
just take out such wires and cords from my old laptop, put my new one in its
place and put the cables in similar holes on the new machine.
I also had a thought. Before I do any of this transferring, it probably is a
good idea to open up this new laptop and see what Vista looks like and
familiarize myself with how to navigate around it. Then try the transferring.
It is still in the box.

Re: Easy Transfer Wizard
Sahara,
This process will take some concentration and, now that you told me your
situation, I'd use ETW and follow the instruction carefully. Let you
stepson help. when you're done, let us know if you have any bad behaviors.
The router and Vonage should not present a problem. These can be handled
separately.

Re: Easy Transfer Wizard
Bob,
My step-son will help me setup the routher again if I need to, but he is
extremely busy. His computer work is creating networks for businesses so he
doesn't deal with this sort of thing. He would try to help me, but lives
1200 miles away and barely has time now to spend with his family. So that is
why I am on this message board. The only thing he heard is about a young
woman who bought the cable and had little problem. Who knows.
I thought about your question about a system. If you meant Operating System,
I have XP Home. Just one old Acer that is dying and a pretty nice refurbished
Mac. The HP Pavilion will be replacing the Acer.
So my first question about putting the photos, files and email messages and
addressbook back on the Acer and let the Easy Transfer cable do the transfer
correctly would be a wise move, don't you think?
Have you transfered from XP to Vista yourself and what, if any problems did
you encounter? I read the problems of all the inexperienced members that are
asking questions (as I am) but you know much more about it. I must admit that
the amount of posts on this board about problems people are having really has
me concerned. Not to be cynical, but I am beginning to think that the name of
this Wizard is mis-named.
Also you advise I follow the directions carefully. I will try to because I
am very detailed oriented person. At the same time, hopefully, the
directions are written for the ordinary human being. It doesn't seem that
they are, otherwise people would not be encountering so many problems. So
many, in fact, that Microsoft has already written solutions for when people
encounter this or that. It looks like this is going to a half or whole day
project if I am lucky. I have a philosophy not to worry about things
beforehand because maybe it ended up being unnecessary. Ihave to admit, that
even if the transfer seems successful, I may very well run into other
problems. Again, I only say that from what I read on this board.
Regarding the Companion that transfers prgrams. I see that is a Beta
version. Again, how it is described would make one think everything is done
easly. Frankly, I think I will see what programs are already installed and
then install the ones I want. Or are prgrams downloaded and installed in the
same manner as in XP? I think I better get that HP up and running and just
get familiar withthe differences and then ask more questions.
I must admit reading other people's posts can be worrisome but again their
problems may not be my problems. (I'll have different ones.) :-) I really
appreciate your time and help.

Re: Easy Transfer Wizard
Sahara,
I understand about the situation with you stepson now. Somehow I got the
impression he was at arms reach and he was available to you. Yes, OS was
the question. thanks. And yes I have transferred all my files from an XP to
a Vista machine but I did it all manually. That is, I bought a new Vista
machine, configured all the devices, networks, added a TV card, installed
all the applications and then copied over all the files, about 80 GB worth.
I ran into all kinds of obstacles that I had to knock down at almost every
turn. They all involved Vista. As I look back, and fall back on my
education and training, the problem is called "proactive interference".
What that means is that you are trying to deal with systems that look the
same but are actually different. In other words, you think you know, but
keep getting surprised since the model in your mind is different from what
you are experiencing. So you have to recognize you have to let go and
relearn some new things, which I did.
I like your philosophy, I call it the Ted Kennedy strategy, you know, "We'll
cross that bridge when we come to it". So we'll go with that.
I am not familiar with the Companion. So I can't help with details. But I
do know what it tries to so and we can pickup any pieces it missed.
Any data files you really want to keep, make sure they are backed up. All
the other stuff is reproducible.
Let me know how you make out.

Re: Easy Transfer Wizard
One year ago I used ETW to transfer all data from an old XP laptop
to a new HP Pavilion laptop. It worked fine. By the way, you don't
need a special cable. You can transfer the files over your home
network.
From what I hear, the ETW Companion only works with a few programs.
Personally I would simply reinstall my programs.
