What anti-virus?
Did it just have an update when this started?
Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled. The latest version of Trend's
anti-virus seems to be causing problems too.

Re: Opening attachments in email
My system "windows vista" came with norton and I upgraded to the same in
Nov. 07...at that time I was using aol and verizon only not windows mail. My
problem began just 3 weeks ago. I only opened windows mail yesterday,
1.28.08. hoping this would help.
email scanning was never on. I will check to see what updates where
installed about the time I beganhavingproblems.

Please tell us :
Is this behaviour for all attachments?
Attachments from all senders or just one?
What are the file extensions of the attachments that will not open?
Have you unchecked the option at tools>options>security>4th down.
Can you send a message with a small attachment to yourself and open it?

Re: Opening attachments in email
This behavior is for all attachments... on all email accounts even word
attachments. I have tried sending to self at aol, verizon, and yahoo. None
will open. If I send it to my laptop with windows XP, it opens.
The optional tool was never checked. I did check to see if this was the
problem.

Re: Opening attachments in email
Norton antivirus is known to be incompatible with Windows Mail.
Often it takes a while for this type of problem to become evident.
Sometimes an update to Norton AV starts the problem.
I suggest you uninstall anything 'Norton' or 'Symantec', then see
if that cures the problem. We can suggest some free alternative
AV programs.

The problem that you are experiencing is not one that I have seen as being a
problem of the program, it seems to me that a 3rd party software influence
is involved in your situation?
Probably Norton? As suggested.

Re: Opening attachments in email
Hi Steve,
I was following this thread, hoping that it might help me with the
exact same problem I have Vista Home Premium 32bit and Norton 2007. If
I remove the firewall rule for wprmgr I can download excel and word
documents for a few weeks. Then the rule will re-appear and I will not
be able to download attachments again. Any suggestions on modifying the
rule (in other words make a new rule) to allow those programs to operate
with web based email? I have searched the Norton website and cannot
find a solution except to delete all firewall rules, which I do not wish
to do. Thank you for any help!

Symantec pays to have trial versions of Norton installed. The two worst
security programs for Windows performance and especially for mail programs
are Norton and McAfee. Just about all of the people who help in these
newsgroups will agree with me.
