How to set associations
When I try to open Windows Mail messages many times I get an error message
which says "This file does not have a program associated with it for
performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations
control panel." I don't find this option in the control panel and don't know
what to do if I did find the option. Is there a way to open these messages?
Thanks for any help you give.

Hi Aussie girl,

Does this happen when you open a message or an attachment in the
message? If it's an attachment, then you will need to have a program
installed that can open the attachment with that file extension. For
example Adobe Reader for a PDF file extension.

RE: How to set associations
Thanks Brink, yes it's when I try to open an attachment, some with
extention.email and others whithout an extention shown. I will try to find
a program for .email.

Can you save the file, then right click on it? That should give you the
option to say what program should open it.

If you need help deciding what program to use, what is the extension
(the part of the file name starting with the last period)?

Also, is the file sent by someone using Outlook? If so, the message
is probably in the RTF format, which Windows Mail cannot handle.

never open them? When I right click on them ithe menu does not include open
with? I'm beginning to think I wish I still had Outlook.

Re: How to set associations
About all you can do about it is install Outlook, preferably version 2003
or later. Version 2002 also runs under Vista, but with a few problems.

Re: How to set associations
Thanks again Robert, I think this is the best way to go and I always liked
Outlook when I used it in Windows XP. Wish Vista had been designed to except
these messages.

Re: How to set associations
But that would decrease Microsoft's chances of selling new software packages
including Outlook.

You're welcome.

Re: How to set associations
Aussie girl I had the same problem, after hours of trying things including
joining communities I came across 'Microsoft office word viewer 2003' in the
downloads, it;s free, and hey presto I can open everything. Best of luck,
Scouse.
