Vista Mail missing

My computer got messed up. I never set up the Vista Mail. I now can
not find it under programs. I am not a computer person, so I need some
help. How do I get it back? When I search for Windows mail in the
search it comes up with it under appdata/local/microsoft/windowsmail
I tried to make a short cut and put it on the desk top to see if that
would open the programbut it just goes back to the window that come up
from my search. I hope you can help

It's name is Windows Mail, but searching for that name does not find it.

If you use the Classic Start Menu, you'll have to use a slower method
to create an icon for it. Double click on Computer (outside Windows
Mail), then C:, then Program Files, then go down the list to Windows
Mail and double click on it, then right click on WinMail.exe if you see
it on WinMail if you don't, then click on Create Shortcut, then approve
putting it on the desktop.

To set up under it, you need instructions from your email provider
(who is probably also your internet provider), so ask them. If they
haven't written instructions for Windows Mail yet, their instructions
for Outlook Express should also work under Windows Mail as long
as they don't call for the HTTP protocol. The instructions should be
somewhere on their web site. Or, you could tell us who your email
provider is and see if anyone here already knows where to find the
instructions.

Re: Vista Mail missing

Hi
I did what you said. I found Windows Mail and there is not an exe file
that I could see.
I found the following en-us, msoe.dll, msoeres.dll, oeimport.dll,
oespamfiler.dat, ospamfilterdll, wab, wab.dll, wabimp.dll,
wabmig,windowsmail gadge.

You said if I didn't see the exe file, then click on create shortcut.
I am not sure where I was suppose to create the shortcut from. I
created one from start/computer/c/ programs/windows mail and all got was
the stuff I typed above. It didn't open anything.
Was I suppose to create the shortcut from one of the files above?

I appreciate you help, but I need some extra help.

Re: Vista Mail missing
If you can not find "Windows Mail" under All Programs, then go
to the actual program itself. Navigate to
C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe. Right-click on that file name,
then select either (or both) "Pin to Start Menu" or "Create Shortcut".

Re: Vista Mail missing
A common mistake that new computer users make is to not
configure your Windows to show file extensions.
Go to Control Panel (classic view), Folder Options, View, uncheck
the option "Hide extensions..."

Re: Vista Mail missing

I appreciate you being patient with me. I have done what you said, I
unchecked hide extensions and now I have 3 exe they are wab.exe,
wabmig.exe and windowsmailgadget.exe.
I do not see winmail.exe. It seems to be missing. What can I do?

Re: Vista Mail missing
Looks like WinMail.exe got deleted, or else it is has become 'hidden'.
Go back to Folder Options, View, click on "Show hidden files and folders."
Refresh your view of the C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\ folder contents.
Do you see WinMail.exe now?

Re: Vista Mail missing

It is not under hidden files. It is checked to hide protected operating
system files. Would it be in there?

How would I reinstall the exe file for the mail ? The only disks I
have is the Reinstallation dvd and the drivers and utilites.

Or could I set my default mail to Google?

Re: Vista Mail missing
You could try System File Checker to see if it can detect and attempt to repair
files:

Type cmd in the Start Search box above the Start Orb. When cmd.exe appears at
the top of the Start Menu, right click on it and select "Run as Administrator"
(run "Elevated"). In the Command window, type sfc /scannow and press Enter.

Re: Vista Mail missing
If System File Checker does not restore the missing file, you have
three other options:
1. Find a friend with a Vista computer and copy the WinMail.exe file.
2. Do a repair-install of Vista. See
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88...all-vista.html
3. (What I would do): Just upgrade to Windows Live Mail:
