missing emails on Vista computer after easy transfer
I was using my Vista computer before I bought an easy transfer cable. I
transfered all my old emails successfully from my old XP laptop but all the
emails on the Vista machine have gone missing. Where are they and how do I
get them back?

Re: missing emails on Vista computer after easy transfer
Do a file search for all files ending with the extension of EML and see if
the transfer program has stored them in a different location. I'm not
certain if it creates a new store folder for the imported mail messages, so
check your Folder List for and "collapsed" Folders.

Re: missing emails on Vista computer after easy transfer
Thanks Jim, I did a search and do not have any files with the extension EML.

Do you have any other suggestions on how to retreive the emails on the Vista
computer from before the 'easy transfer'?

Re: missing emails on Vista computer after easy transfer
I'd open Windows Mail, and click the menu, Tools/Options/Advanced and then
click the Maintenance/Store Folder buttons to determine the location of your
message store folder. Then use Windows Explorer to navigate to that folder
and search for any mail. Are you set in Folder options of Explorer to show
file extensions? I just find it hard to believe that you cannot find *any*
files ending with the extension of EML.

Re: missing emails on Vista computer after easy transfer
Thanks Jim

I opened Tools/ Options from Outlook and found an Advanced button in the
'other folder' but within this, could not find a Maintenance/Store Folder.

I opened the windows mail icon from control panel but Tools was not
available to click on. When I selected one of the Archive folders and
settings, it showed me where the folders were. THere are 2 archive.pst files
and 2 outlook.pst files but they are in a Word format and cannot be opened.
If one of these folders is my missing emails, how do I get them back into my
outlook folder so that I can read them?

Some files did come up when I did a search for eml, there were some emails,
but only a fraction and were dated before the transfer over from the old
computer and after the transfer on the new computer, none of them were from
the missing period. Also some xls files appeared too in the search.

Thanks for taking the time to help me here - it is appreciated.

Re: missing emails on Vista computer after easy transfer
I assume you are using Windows Mail in MS Vista? If you open Windows Mail
and open Tools/Options/Advanced/Maintenance/Store Folder, you should see
where they are being stored on your new computer.

I fear it's possible that you may have overwritten the original folder that
had some existing emails in it. I think I recall that you used Vista a
while on a new comuter before transfering older emails from an older
machine. I am not sure it will "append" the incoming messages to the
existing ones. I wouldn't be surprised if that overwrote the newer ones on
Vista in the process.

Did you see a warning to that effect? I think there used to be a warning
like that in XP and Outlook Express but I am no sure about Vista.

I hope this helps,

Tom

Re: missing emails on Vista computer after easy transfer
That suggests that you have chosen to use Outlook as your default mail
program. If you really want to use Windows Mail, go to Start/Control Panel
and then click the Default Programs icon and within that applet, select
Windows Mail as you default mail program. In Windows, only one program can
be your "default" mail program even though you may have many mail
applications installed. Once that is done, then you should be able to use
the choices in Windows Mail, File/Import/Messages - selecting From Outlook
(if the PST file in question is also the default one that Outlook uses when
it runs). Good luck.

Re: missing emails on Vista computer after easy transfer
Hi

I am using Outlook 2003.

When I open Tools / Options from here I have the following choices:

Preferences
Mail Set up
Mail Format
Spelling
Security
Other

Where do you suggest I look for the Maintenance/Store Folder so that I can
find my missing emails?

Thanks

Sharon

Re: missing emails on Vista computer after easy transfer
I have just spoken to Belkin and it did indeed overwrite my emails without
any warning. They suggest that Vista may have stored them somewhere as an
'.old' file. Any suggestions about how to retrieve this if this is indeed
what Vista does under these curcumstances?
