Exporting from Windows Mail
After struggling with Vista these last few month, I've opted to go back
to XP.
I'm trying to find a way to save all of my mail. I'm currently using
Windows Mail, and my first thought was to export all of my mail in
"Microsoft Exchange" format. Then, when I install XP, I could Import
it into Outlook Express.
Two problems have arisen:
1. In Vista, I attempt to export into Microsoft Exchange Format. I
get a message that says "The export could not be performed. An error
occurred while initializing MAPI."
2. On my test XP system, when I try to import Microsoft Exchange
format I get a message that says "Messages cannot be imported from the
MAPI client. No profiles are configured on this computer."
I've looked around, but haven't found any obvious solutions.
Is this possible?
Should I try another mail program? Is so, which one?
Thanks,
Bruce

Re: Exporting from Windows Mail
Save copies of all messages in EML format. You can then drag & drop them
into an appropriate OE folder.

You're making it too complicated.
WinMail keeps its messages in
C:\Users\[UserNsame]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Local Folders
You will see that there is a subfolder for each of the folders in WinMail.
The messages are stored in these subfolders as individual EML files.
Copy all of the folders to a convenient place in the machine that has OE.
Then you can drag all of these EML files into whatever folder you want in
OE. Once they are in OE they will lose the cryptic title and show up with
the proper subject..
Once again, even though you saved the EML files in their folders, you just
did that for convenience. The EML files are what you will actually drag
into OE.

That's how I would do it.

Re: Exporting from Windows Mail
I'm going through the same thing but I couldn't find AppData folder in Users.
Where do I find that or can I just copy and paste (after putting my name in
the username parenthesis):
C:\Users\[UserNsame]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Local Folders in
somewhere?
Thanks so much!

Saving Windows Mail messages by subjects
Hi: I use WM in Vista Home Basic. I just want to save all my messages by
subjects and dates in a portable storage medium so that I can refer to them
on the go (openable by IE or something). Any idea how to do this, please?

Re: Saving Windows Mail messages by subjects
That's not going to work very well because the messages won't open in IE.
You can force them to open in Notepad, especially the plain text ones, but
the messages that are in HTML format will look very messy.
If you want to try anyway: File, Export, Messages, Microsoft Windows Mail.
For the target, select an empty folder under Documents. Then copy from
there to your external media. WM won't export directly to external media.

Re: Saving Windows Mail messages by subjects
Thanks. I did manage to save the message in a folder on Desktop. But the
names of the messages saved appear in some alphanumeric form:
0A1E218E-00000038, etc. Any way to view the Subjects and dates of the
messages saved?
