go to tools>accounts>select your account>properties>connection tab, remove
the check mark from "always connect using">Apply/OK.
Open IE tools>internet options>connections tab, set to 'never dial a
connection'.

In Internet Explorer, click on Tools, then Internet Options, then
Connections,
then the circle before Never dial a connection, then Apply, then OK.
In Windows Mail, click on Tools, then Options, then Connection. If there
is no check mark in the box before Ask before switching dial-up
connections, click on this box and then Apply. If there is a check mark
in the box before Hang up after sending and receiving, click on this box
and then Apply. Click on OK.

Colin, try what I suggested previously, "go to tools>accounts>select your
account>properties>connection tab, remove
the check mark from "always connect using">Apply/OK.
**But first go to the file menu>"Work Offline".**
If that fails try removing the account and setting it up again.

Please elaborate on the HP address in accessing IE>tools.
Do you have any 3rd party programs installed that are designed to scan your
system for spy ware, virus etc?
What are they?
