Have browsed various threads but cannot find answer to my problem. When I'm
sent an email containing a picture (not as an attachment), I cannot see it .
I see little red x. ???????????

If it was sent using Windows Mail, the sender may have forgotten to
close all other programs that access the attachment file before telling
Windows Mail to attach it. Windows Mail automatically treats
any pictures in the message as attachments.

Verify that the picture was really included:

a) If the message size is less than 10KB, there's no picture.
b) Look at the raw source code (Ctrl+F3) which will show a mass of
random characters if there is a picture included.
