Windows Mail not working 0x800CCC0F help me please !!!

Hi i know a lot of people have had similar issues with Vista and mail
but none of the solutions have helped me! Can any of you please assist
before i go mad !!!

Mail is not working on my new Vista laptop. It is connected to a
network in my office.

Here is the message i receive when i open Windows Mail.

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes
for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Subject 'test2', Account: 'pop.1and1.co.uk', Server:
'auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes

inactivity. Account: 'pop.1and1.co.uk', Server: 'pop.1and1.co.uk',
Protocol: POP3, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

I can access files from the server. I have turned off Windows
Protector. I have uninstalled Norton. I have switched off the
firewall. I do not have mcaffee or any virus protection running.

The ports 110 and 25 were default and work for all other pcs (all
non-vista) in the office (i have tried some of the other numbers
suggested on the forum to no avail).

Msoft won't help without a fee as the software was pre-installed.
PC World won't help because beyond their experts level of expertise
despite selling it to me.

Can anyone please help me ?!! Is it a port number issue ? Can i
search for the right ones somehow ? Do i need to tick an obscure box
somewhere ?
The server is running on Windows 2000, Management Console 1.2 V 5.0
Build 2195 if that helps !

thank you
Daniel

I've read that some of the server software needs an update, available for
the last several months, to work properly if you log in from Vista.
I don't remember the details, but you might ask how much it's caught
up with the updates.

This may help if you've downloaded the software to read .pdf files:

You are going to have to get instructions from the people with the server.
If they don't know how to set up Windows Mail ask them for instructions for
Outlook Express. You definitely are using ports that I've never heard of
any server using the way you are. A standard setup would use port 110 for
POP3 and port 25 for SMTP

Looks like you have swapped the incoming and outgoing server names.
