Keep getting 'disconnect' message -- can't send mail
When I try to send something, I get a message that my server has unexpectedly
terminated the connection. It gives a variety of reasons this might happen --
network problems, server problems, inactivity. However, I am still connected
to the server-- I am receiving messages just fine, and my connection to the
Internet is solid. I use Firefox and Earthlink. I am able to use the
Earthlink mail program just fine. Any suggestions.

Right-click on the error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
There are diagnostic details in there that we need to see.
Also, which antivirus program are you running?

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled. The latest version of Trend's
anti-virus seems to be causing problems too.

Re: Keep getting 'disconnect' message -- can't send mail

Hi to all and thanks:

I contacted Earthlink's on-line chat and we worked it out. Apparently the
default setting for outbound mail needed adjusting. Working fine now.

My Outlook Express files were successfully transferred from my old laptop, but I find no files or folders in Outlook Express. My addresses/contacts, old saved emails, etc. came through fine. What up?

Looks like you're running more than one antivirus program, which often
causes problems. Also, most versions of the Norton antivirus program
cause assorted problems in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately.
To stop them from creating new problems, you have to uninstall them,
not just disable them. You often then need the cleanup program for
this:

<http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039>

You often then have to remove your email account under Windows Mail
and then create it again to finish getting rid of the problems.

If Windows Mail works correctly after this, you may want a replacement
antivirus program. I recommend either avast! or AVG for home use,
either one with a custom install that tells it to leave out the part that
scans
email, or NOD32 for business use:

Outlook Express won't run under Vista. It sounds like you were
able to import its information into Windows Mail, though.
