Folders that disappear and many other problems with windows mail and Vista
Hi,
My new portable pc is under vista. I then had to switch from outllook
express to windows mail :
1/ I lost the possibility of using an hotmail account
2/ When i read a mail, the count of unread mails (at the right of the
folder's name) does not change till next opening of windows mail
3/ Windows mail is very very slow
4/ Very often a message says that mails cannot be displayed due to lack of
memory (my PC has 2 Mb and is a brand new toshiba X200-213) or to hard disk
space (there are 55 Gb free)
5/ Very often, all folders disappear . The only one folder left is the inbox
and i cannot see its content. After rebooting my pc i can see all folders
and mails again.
Any help or advice on points 2,4 or 5 ?
Many thanks
Luc-Aix (from Aix-en-Provence / France)

Re: Folders that disappear and many other problems with windows mail and Vista
Part of your problem is probably due to running a non-
compatible antivirus (McAfee or Norton).
Since you need Hotmail access, there is little point in attempting
to fix your Windows Mail. You need to upgrade to Windows
Live Mail:
http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview
Even with Windows Live Mail, your antivirus needs to be set
*not* to scan emails. For more on this topic see

I use Norton.. Do you mean i should stop using it? Is it a bug Norton is
going to fix?

I was reluctant to use windows live mail and the links with the web. I was
wondering whether my non-hotmail accounts and address book would be known by
microsoft of kept private on my pc. I also read there were commercial
banners with windows live mail
Even with Windows Live Mail, your antivirus needs to be set
*not* to scan emails. For more on this topic see

Do i have do stop using Norton or just stop scanning the mails? I never had
any problem with outlook express wich i much prefer
Thanks

Re: Folders that disappear and many other problems with windows mail and Vista
Windows Mail appears to be more sensitive to corruption from
aggressive antivirus programs (such as Norton) than Windows Live
Mail is. As I said before, you should be OK using Norton with the
latter as long as you make sure Norton's email scanning option is off.
The only connections that Windows Live Mail has with the web are
the ones you allow. There are no ads or commercial banners.

Re: Folders that disappear and many other problems with windows mail and Vista
If (when) Norton fixes their bug they will issue an autimatic update later
that breaks WinMail again.

Re: Folders that disappear and many other problems with windows mail and Vista
For the problems caused by Norton, you need to uninstall it to stop it
from causing problems, not just inactivate it. You may want to replace
it with either avast! or AVG, either one with a custom install that tells
it to leave out the part that scans email.

There doesn't seem to be a newsgroup for ie7 in English yet. You might
try microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.browser, but be sure to
say you're discussing ie7 under Vista.
