windoes mail does not show list of messages in selsected local folder

When I open one of the local folders ( Inbox, deleted items, etc. ) I do not
get a list of the messages in the folder. Instead, I get the full text
version of one of the messages in the folder. If I delete that message,
the next message show up where the list should be.

It sounds like the Preview Pane is hiding the Message List.
Move the cursor up in the message until it becomes a double arrow. Hold
down the left button and drag it down.
