Cleaning Up Messages in WinMail

Vista Home Premium; Windows Mail all fully updated.

Tools/Options/Advanced/Maintenance - Delete news messages 31 days after
being downloaded ticked.

The other day I had to manually delete some 20,000 messages from 8
subscribed NGs, some going back to September. This function seems to be
erratic in operation.

Is there any other setting needing tweaking.

Also will Clean Up Now... tab remove ALL messages, or just the >31 days
ones.

This is the second time of asking as my OP disappeared without trace before
anyone replied.
