Windows Mail and Contacts
There have been moments for the past month or so, when I send emails out to
some contacts in my Windows Mail Contact list, the email I sent out will
bounce back to me (never making it to its destination). The message will
come back with a .dat file attached to it and the file will read as follows:
"The file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action. Create an association in the Set Associations in the Control Panel."

This does not happen to all contacts that I send email out to. Just some.
Can you please tell me what this can be. It has been going on for about 1
month now. I need to find way to stop it, as some of these contacts are
important.

Your help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Windows Mail and Contacts
When included with a bounce notice, the contents of the .dat file is not
really significant. Any other information included with the bounce notice
might be significant, such as an error number or explanation for the bounce.

However, if you are receiving a file such as winmail.dat via a regular email
reply (not a bounce notice), then the explanation would be different.

Re: Windows Mail and Contacts
Gary this is the error code of the message that I am getting:

Final-Recipient: rfc822;susan.bozarzin@sympatico.ca
Action: failed
Status: 5.5.0
Diagnostic-Code: smtp;550 #5.1.0 Address rejected susan.bozarzin@sympatico.ca

What is weird about this. Is that my email server is the same as this
persons and I have difficulty sending her email and she is my sister. She
has added my email address into the windows mail safelist.

Also there are other contacts emails bouncing back with what you say of the
dat file is irrelevant but with the same error code. These people are
friends also and different servers though.

Can you help me figure out what this source error code means please?

Thanks so much.

Re: Windows Mail and Contacts
Well, it's not just you or your email program. I tried that email address
at one of my testing sites:
http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/mail.c...n@sympatico.ca
and got the same failure message as you did.

Either that email address really is bad, or else there is something wrong
with the mail server.

Sympatico has changed their mail server settings over the years. Are you
using their latest settings?

Re: Windows Mail and Contacts
Hi Peter,

I do not know about what the means?

However the (.) between susan and bojarzin is part of her email address.
When she set up her email address, this is how her server helped her set
up her email address. With a (.) between her first and last name. I have
seen many email addresses with a (.) between the first and last email
address.

hmmm.

Re: Windows Mail and Contacts
Well I am going to get in touch with my sister and let her know that the
possibility exists that her email address might be bad. However the error
code that came with her email address rejection wonder what that meant too?

Also, I checked my server set up according to your url below and mine is all
the same.

Thanks, Charmaine

Re: Windows Mail and Contacts
The error message means that the mail server can't deliver email to that
address, either because the address is invalid, or the recipient's mailbox
is malfunctioning. Are you able to send your sister email via Hotmail or
another webmail account like Yahoo?

Re: Windows Mail and Contacts
Gary,

I have been using the correct email address for my sister, however gave you
the incorrect email address.

Can you please test this email address

susan.bojarzin@sympatico.ca
and see if you still get the error code below. Thanks, Charmaine

I got the same failure error message for susan.bojarzin@sympatico.ca.
Were you able to email her via Hotmail or Yahoo webmail?
