I received a similar error after a Windows Vista Update:
1. Windows Mail could not be started. Your computer may be out of
memory or your disk is full.
2. I click ok, then receive the second error:
"Windows Mail could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be
initialized."
3. Also, my Desktop items were all gone except for one item.
4. I did not have the run the chkdsk utility message.
I followed instructions from another forum to delete the registry key
for Windows Mail and restart. This did not work. So, I installed
Windows Live Mail as you recommended. Also, I did not complete
configuration of the Windows Live Mail, since I had to go to another
pc to look-up my Incoming Mail and Outgoing Mail server names. I just
guessed (incorrectly) and entered something. I think I launched
Windows Live Mail and then Windows Mail. Windows Mail still gave me
the same errors, and it was late, so I shut down. Then, tonight I
powered up my laptop to try some other things, but I noticed that my
desktop icons were back on my Desktop. So, I re-launched Windows
Mail, and it worked perfectly. Therefore, I think that I needed to re-
boot the laptop after installing Windows Live Mail. After that, my
Windows Mail launched without error and my desktop icons were back on
my Desktop.
Thanks!
