attachments sending help

Is there a setting somewhere in Windows mail where you determine who large of
a file you can attach and send? i cannot seem to send anything over around
2mb. Oh, and i've already got the virus protection stuff off, so it's not
that. and i've got the setting that determines how long it should try sending
before timing out, set to the longest allowable time. And, if i log into the
webmail page for the same email account, i am able to send the same files i
can't send in Windows mail.

I don't know of any limit in Windows Mail. It's probably the mail server
that has the limit. What error message do you get?

thanks so much for the reply. i am fairly certain it is not the mail server,
because i was able to send larger files with no problem prior to getting my
new laptop with the Vista OS on it. The error message just says the smtp
server has not responded in 240 seconds, and it asks me if i want to wait
longer. the smtp server is smtp.charter.net. does that help you understand
what the problem might be?

I am experiencing the same problem. I, too, used to be able to send these
files using Outlook Express, but cannot since I switched to Vista. Like you,
I can still send the files if I access the Webmail's webpage. Have you found
the solution?

I am having the same problem. If I try to send an attachment over 3.5 Meg
through Windows Mail, I get the message "Your SMTP server has not responded
in 60 seconds". It asks if I want to try again. The message that I am
attempting to send stays in the outbox and I can then delete it. Through
Windows Mail, I have extended the timeout up to 240 seconds. Now it just
waits longer to tell me that the server has not responded.

For me, it seems like a single file around 3.5 Meg is the breaking point. I
can send a group of several smaller JPEG files that add up to 5 Meg and they
go through. The file types that are not going through are WMV, AVI, and WMA.
I don't have any single JPEG files that are over 3.5 so that is why I tried
sending several.

I talked to clearwire.net who is my internet provider. They had a couple of
suggestions on their end which did not make any difference. I also tried
disabling McAfee which didn't help either. Like the other folks, I am able to
send these attachments by going through my provider's website, so it seems
like a Windows Mail/Vista issue.

This is not a big problem for me since I normally don't send big
attachments, and I have an alternative way to send big files. I feel
fortunate because the only other issue that I have is that I just have one
ghost email carcuss stuck in my inbox. If I leave it alone, it doesn't hurt
anything. I suppose that it is a matter of time before they start getting
stuck in my outbox as well.

Just how did you "disable" McAfee? Quite a few people have
reported no relief until McAfee was uninstalled completely.

Thanks Gary for responding. I did not uninstall McAfee. I just turned off the
email protection. Maybe that is the problem. I had seen on other posts that
McAfee maybe contributing to a lot of the issues that people are
experiencing. At this time, my email is functional and I don't have any major
issues that I can't work around. Unless something really starts to go bad for
me, I think that I will wait awhile until I make software modifications. Just
reading about all of the poor souls who are having to unistall and reinstall
software and email accounts just to get their basic email to work is mind
boggling. I would rather not fix something that is not broken unless I have
to. (Unless you have an alternative to WM that you would highly recommend),
Also, just wondering, if I were to uninstall McAfee, what would you recommend
for protection? (Norton is the only other one that I have used on my old
computer.) And is there a learning curve to install the new stuff?

Hi! Guys!


I have the same problem. BUT...I do not have any virus software. Vista
Windows e-mail is the problem. Remember the old days, guys, when we had
Outlook and Windows XP? No issues.

I haven't seen a response yet that solves this issue. Mamybe someone from
Microsoft can answer it or something.

It makes us with Windows E-mail look like we are in the stone ages and can't
keep up with everyone else. I would love a sloution to this. What the hell
went wrong with MS technology??

Right now as I write this I am sending a song to a friend. It is stuck. It
is saying it can't do it or some error message crap.
