Yes, this is different now and I don't think there's a way to get it back to
like it was in Outlook Express.

I can't see this problem. If they are unread when I close WinMail they are
unread when I open it. In news, the torn page becomes a full page when the
message has been downloaded. Bolding indicates whether or not it has been
read. Just like OE.
