How do I get rid of the picture in my contacts list?

You can't really, but if you open Start/Windows Contacts and on the menu bar
(Organize/Views/Slide Show,etc.) click on Views and change it to either List
or Details, the pic is much smaller and less intrusive. The intent is that
some users might wish to display an actual graphic of the contact.

There are options under Tools | Options | Advanced at the bottom.
