Can't send email while in Windows mail

Windows mail in Vista Home Premium says there is an error when I try to send
email. (I receive OK.) But then when I close the program and I have unsent
emails in the outbox, it sends them just fine! What's that about?

What is the complete error message?

The spot for the error message is blank, but I think I've discovered more
detail about the problem. "Send/Receive All" works fine ONLY if you have
something to send AND something to receive.
