Re: Windows Mail - Importing Outlook Express Email
Then either you copied the wrong set of DBX files or they were emptied
before you copied them. Is the old computer still available?

Try DBXtract or DRXpress. The latter can search the hard drive for messages
read about both at http://www.oehelp.com ; these, BTW are Steve's site and
programs.

Re: Windows Mail - Importing Outlook Express Email

i too have been haveing this problem, system is a dual boot system, drive
c:\ is winxp.sp2 drive d:\ is vista home premium. did a clean install of
both operating systems.

copied the dbx files from the old winxp partition to the new winxp
partition. they are able to be pulled up correctly in outlook express and no
corruption seems to be taking place.
also copied all the .dbx file to the documents folder of the vista
partition, set attributes to no t be read only and ownership/ permissions are
correctly set for full access.
vista mail does not recognize any dbx files in either directory. not only
that i attempted to send an e-mail with vista mail and the mail went into the
outbox and i recieved an unknown error. now every time i check mail the mail
is resent to the recipient. i am unable to delete the message or move it to
another folder.

Re: Windows Mail - Importing Outlook Express Email
You can go to the Outbox directory and delete the eml file directly. It
will be at

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Local Folders\Outbox

I don't know why the import won't work.

You can try repairing the database as follows:

>> Open a command prompt using Run as Administrator.
>>
>> Then copy this line, edit the path to the messasge store, and then hit

>>
>> esentutl /p "path\windowsmail.msmessagestore"

Re: Windows Mail - Importing Outlook Express Email
tried that already, the import tool won't even recognize the .dbx files as
being outlook express files.

Re: Windows Mail - Importing Outlook Express Email
It seems to be a chronic problem with Microsoft programs that they have a
shocking compatibility issue. it is resolvable, but one has to essentially
steer clear of as much Microsoft software as possible. If you only want to
rescue your emails so you can view them again, something like DBXtract etc.
works well, otherwise i'm about to try installing thunderbird to see if that
will accept my old dbx files. As with other mozilla programs, i'm quite sure
it will work well. Only microsoft is foolish enough not to be compatible
with itself.

Re: Windows Mail - Importing Outlook Express Email
Yes its rather amazing that M$ windows mail is not able to import from
Outlook express or Outlook. I tried and was totally shocked when nothing
would work. Way to go M$.

Re: Windows Mail - Importing Outlook Express Email
You can import from the OE message store into WinMail. see
www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx#oe2wm

Most people are getting stuck on point 5 there.

Also, one can import by just pointing to a single dbx file (non-corrupt)
with my OEX program: www.oehelp.com/OEX/ and it works in OE and in WinMail.

Re: Windows Mail - Importing Outlook Express Email
I only saved my .pst files, not figuring I'd need any other. Is there a way
to import those into Windows mail that I'm missing? I'm going from Outlook
on XP to Vista mail.
