Now that I'm forced to look at Unicode characters.....
How do I disable searching for hyperlinks?
AND
How do I get the "Combine and Decode" feature back on the mouse right click
(context menu)?
Thanks.

Re: Now that I'm forced to look at Unicode characters.....
Try disabling the Preview pane via View | Layout and see if that gets rid of
the first one.

Re: Now that I'm forced to look at Unicode characters.....
Yes it does. But then I have to dbl click any message I want to view. And
if it contains UNICODE characters, then what's the point of not having a
preview pane.
Why dis Microsoft take a prefectly good piece of software and make it worse
IMHO?
Anyone know of a newsreader that behaves like OE6 but works in Vista?

Re: Now that I'm forced to look at Unicode characters.....
Disable the Preview Pane as Steve said. Then when you get a multipart
message, select all the parts and click on the menu, Message/Combine and
Decode. If you fail to select multiple messages, the Combine and Decode
will be "greyed" out.
Hopefully, all your correspondents will label parts of the message (i.e.,
1/15, 2/15, etc.)

Re: Now that I'm forced to look at Unicode characters.....
You guys from Microsoft are really blind, aren't you. You only know what's
written in those damn Microsoft Tech books, no real world experience at all.
1. In OE6, I was able to view part 1 of any multi part message. Whether it
was JPG, MPG, RAR, ZIP, etc. Part 1 would always show up as the attachment.
Granted, it was only that part that would show up. Parts 2 thru whatever
were unicode. In OE7, part 1 is now UNICODE. By D/L part 1 in OE6, I am
able to decide if I want to download the entire message, especially those
large MB files. Why waste time and bandwidth when I don't need too.
2. Why was the combine and decode removed from the context menu? It was so
easy to just right click and select. Now I have to go to the Message menu
and select combine and decode.
3. Again, how do I disable the "searching for hyperlinks" when displaying a
UNICODE message? That's a simple question, or so I thought. Disable the
preview pane is not an acceptible answer. How would I know a message is
UNICODE until I display it? What does it matter if it's in a reading pane or
after DBL clicking the message to open it.
You know what, forget it. Windows Mail sucks as a newsgroup reader. Hell,
Microsoft didn't even add yenc support. Still have to use a yenc proxy app
to view messages. I'll use OE6 till I'm forced to switch to another program,
so that means staying with Windows XP.
Thank you for your input.

Re: Now that I'm forced to look at Unicode characters.....
Hi, Stan.
> You guys from Microsoft
You've got to be kidding! Dr. Steve Cochran is one of the strongest - and
most effective - critics of Microsoft's Outlook Express and now Windows
Mail! He has been hammering at MS for years, resulting in many of the
improvements that we enjoy today. Sadly, many of the powers that be within
MS still haven't implemented many of his recommendations. Jim Pickering is
less vocal than Steve, more the "elder statesman" type. He knows more about
the program than many of the MS people who wrote it, I'm sure, although he
didn't participate in writing it. Go back and re-read their posts and you
will see that both offered help to you; neither of them criticized you, but
you chose to criticize those who were trying to help you.
Those two guys have more "real world experience" with OE/WM than anybody you
know, probably. What they know IS from real world experience. Too bad the
folks who write "those damn Microsoft Tech books" don't pay more attention
and learn more from Steve and Jim.
As you may not know, Microsoft MVPs do NOT work for Microsoft. We are
unpaid volunteers. Some say that we work for Microsoft's customers, but I
say that we try to help out anybody who is having a computer problem. Most
of those people are running Windows and other MS products, of course, but we
are just as eager to help with Quicken or Photoshop or even Linux. For more
about MVPs, just click here: http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ To call
Steve and Jim "guys from Microsoft" is so far from reality that it's funny!
I don't know anything about Unicode or the other topics in your post, so I
won't try to get involved in the substance of your problem. But your attack
on Steve and Jim is totally uncalled-for. You owe them a retraction and an
apology.

Re: Now that I'm forced to look at Unicode characters.....
Do you know what it's like to use an app for years, then have someone change
it on you that the features you are used to are no longer there?
Plus the fact the Steve answered once before that what I was asking for in
OE7 wasn't even in OE6, which it is. 2nd to tell me to turn off the preview
pane? I would expect more from Steve if he is as who you describe. Most
times I find that people that try to help those online, for the most part,
assume we don't know what we are doing.
And then Jim comes on and reiterates what Steve said, like the first time
wasn't enough.
You are right. They are trying to help. And I assumed wrong about them
working for Microsoft. I apologize for that. People of Steve's and Jim's
caliber deserve better.
But then again, so do we. You can't always assume that the person you are
trying to help is a novice. THAT alone is so frustrating.
I hold an MCSE in Windows 2000 Server, 2000 AD, Exchange 2000. I have been
using Windows since Windows 286. Remember that old fogy. Been using OE
since Windows 98. God I miss my old BBS days when I could dial up and use a
terminal app like telix to access usenet.
I may not be at Steve and Jim's level, but at 25 + years experience, I
deserve better than, "turn off the preview pane".

If you'd ever worked a help desk, you'd know that you HAVE to assume
the person you're trying to help is a novice. To see why let's say you DON'T
make that assumption. Now, you've lost about 80% of your audience who
are NOT experts. If you assume everyone is a novice, the experts can
follow your advice but so can the actual novices. Remeber, an answer in this
or any forum isn't just for the person who asked the question. That's what
email is for. The forums are so EVERYONE can benefit.

Re: Now that I'm forced to look at Unicode characters.....
Hi, Stan.
I'm not the argumentative type, so this will probably be my last post in
this thread. I appreciate your apology to Steve and Jim.
But, just as you did not know their background, there was no way they could
have divined your expertise from your original post. The full text of that
post is quoted at the bottom of this one.
As you can see, there is NOTHING in there about your 25 years experience or
your MCSE or any other clue that you might be an expert. There was not even
a Sig and your message was from simply "Stan", with not even a domain name
that might indicate something other than a novice status. If YOU had
received such a message, would you have assumed that the poster was an
expert?
And, as Tom Lake said, in a newsgroup, we never know who will read our post.
"Lurking" is encouraged here, so we never know who will be "reading over our
shoulders". I've learned a lot by lurking in newsgroups. But we have to
assume that at least a few novices will be reading every message, so we must
be sure that our advice and comments are "suitable for all audiences".
(By the way, yes, I do remember upgrading to Windows 286. My first computer
was the original TRS-80 in December 1977. I bought a Tandy 2000 (with an
80186 CPU) in the early 1980's because ads on the back of Creative Computing
magazine featured Bill Gates' photo, saying that the T2K's graphics would
make it a great machine for his future Windows operating system. That
machine was just about obsolete before Windows 1.0 finally appeared.)
Good luck with your Unicode problem, Stan. I'm sorry that I can't help with
that one.
