Junk E-mail folder has red "stop" symbol - can't view, empty or put anything it it
The Junk E-mail folder in Windows Mail (Vista Ultimate 32 bit RTM) has acquired a red "stop" symbol (see attached).

I can not view the content, empty it, delete it or add any new "junk emails" to it.

I have no idea what I did to deserve this problem.

How do I get my Junk E-mail folder "working" again?

Re: Junk E-mail folder has red "stop" symbol - can't view, empty or put anything it it
That's the normal appearance for the Junk mail folder in Windows Mail,
whether it's empty or full.

If there is a number indicating unread messages and you cannot see them, try
clicking Tools/Options/Read and put a check mark in the Box to Read All in
Plain Text. Then exit and return to the folder and see if you can now see
any unread messages.

Re: Junk E-mail folder has red "stop" symbol - can't view, empty or put anything it it
Thanks for your reply.

Did as you suggested (Tools/Options/Read and put a check mark in the Box to
Read All in Plain Text.). This did not appear to make any difference.

The number 10 appears in brackets beside the Junk E-mail item in the left
pane, but no messages show in the right pane.

Also, I have a "Message Rule" to automatically move mail items into Junk
E-mail when certain text appears in the Subject (put there when my ISP's
mail system suspects the email is SPAM). This Rule used to work, but now
the messages with this text in the subject do not get moved, even when I use
the Message Rule dialog's Apply Now button - the messages stay in the Inbox.

I created a new folder (under Local Folders) in Winmail and changed the
Message Rule to move the messages to that folder and the Message Rule
worked - the messages with the specified subject got moved to the new folder
when I used "Apply Now".

If I look in the Junk E-mail folder with Explorer, I see 10 .eml files and a
winmail.fol file.

If I right click on Junk E-mail and select Empty Junk E-mail folder, I get a
message box that says "Some of the items in the 'Junk E-mail' folder could
not be deleted. An error has occurred."

Well, no kidding! But what "error" and how to fix it?

I see several occurrences of the following entries in the Application Event

Re: Junk E-mail folder has red "stop" symbol - can't view, empty or put anything it it
You're not alone in having problems with ESENT errors. The database
indexing has changed in this final RTM application and we're all unsure of
how or why any change was made. If you close Windows Mail and use Explorer
to navigate to the Store folder, you should be able to delete the unreadable
EML files from the Junk folder, but I suspect that will cause an error in
the indexing on next startup. We'll see if anyone on the developer team has
any ideas as to what's going on and try to get back to you.

Bruce -

Can you give us a little more information regarding how you are getting this
issue to reproduce? Are you using your local folders or IMAP folders?

And any other information you can give us would be very much appreciated!

Thanks!

Try compacting the database and see if it fixes the problems.

Go to Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance and change the 100 closings
to 1. Then close WinMail and it should compact. Then reopen it and change
the number back again and see if that made any difference.

For what its worth, most with such problems are saying compaction doesn't
help. But its worth a try.

Tried that (thanks for the post), but no joy - same problem!

Re: Junk E-mail folder has red "stop" symbol - can't view, empty or put anything it it
Did that; compaction process ran for a while, then I got a Data Execution
Prevention exception and a message that Windows Mail had been closed.

Opened Windows Mail again - same problem - Junk Email says there are 10
unread messages but none show up.

Closed Windows Mail again, compaction started again, got about 80% done
(according to progress bar) then another DEP exception. Here's what appears
to be the corresponding Application Event Log entry:
