Can't Open/Save attachments In Windows Mail - Solved.
I have been researching this for days as I could no longer open or save
attachments in Windows Mail. Did not matter what the attachment was it
would not open or save.

I have seen many post on this newsgroup and one where Frank (MVP)
pointed to other nerwsgroups for help.

I first noticed it about 2 weeks but went on holidays and thus have not
been able to deal with it till this week.

I wondered if one of the updates that have come down from MS recently
had something to do with this. I found this nice little gem:

Update for Windows Mail Junk E-mail Filter [August 2007] (KB905866)

Download size: 2.1 MB

You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.

Update type: Recommended

Install this update for Windows Mail to revise the definition files used
to detect e-mail messages that should be considered junk e-mail or that
may contain phishing content. After you install this item, you may have
to restart your computer.

More information:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=79015

I removed it and rebooted my computer now all has been restored to
normal operation. I can once again open/save attachments.

Not sure why this download did this but I have seen many others with the
same problem and thought I would share this.

Thanks

Phil

Removing updates for the junk e-mail filter is not a good solution.
Are you running any non-compatible security software, such as
products from McAfee or Norton?

No I am running AVG

While it may not be a good thing to remove updates I think when no one
has a solution one must look at what is now different after they added
or updated their computer. MS has issued updates in the past that have
had problems and taken them off the update site and reworked them. The
question I am having is why so many people are having a problem with
this update. I search on google finds many who are.

Still, those having problems with this update must be a very small minority
since we have not seen any mass hue and cry about it in this forum.
Those who are having this particular problem must have something in
common, like a certain third party software program.

You may be right but this was only a definition update. Everything
worked fine prior to the update. A definition update should not cause
this. I have had other definition updates and no problems, why this time.

What I want to understand is how a simple update such as this can cause
such a problem as I have explained. What is it in another program that
has caused this. I know it is like looking for a needle in a hay stack.

Further to this I have downloaded the new Junk email update that came
out yesterday and have had no problems at all with it. None of the
problems I had with the prior update don't exist. Nothing else installed
or deleted other than Windows updates. It is very suspicious that the
prior update rendered windows mail almost useless to me, yet the new
update is fine.

It is fine to say it "may" be a 3rd party software issue but MS is not
without problems. Sometimes one has to bite the bullet and say maybe
just maybe it could be a MS update that causes this problem in some
computers. In my case I would say this is the case.
