Send/receive problem
I've just got a new PC with Windows Mail and have set up my email account
correctly. When I click send & receive, nothing happens - it doesn't check
for new emails and doesn't send emails in my outbox. If I create a new email
and click send it just stays in my outbox.
However, if I close down Windows Mail and restart it, emails are received
and sent.
Why isn't "send & receive" working?
Thanks

Hi Linda,

First:
Make sure your antivirus program has all of it's email scanning options
turned off. If you have Norton or McAfee, uninstall it and use
something like the free Avast instead. They are not compatible with
Vista. Test and see if it is working ok now.

'Free antivirus - avast! 4 Home Edition'

Second:
Check to see if you have a stuck undeletable message in your Outbox or
Inbox. If yes, then read the top portion at this link and do the
section for the folder that you have the stuck message in to get rid of
it.

First things first...

Make sure you do not have Norton or McAfee antivirus software on your PC.
They are incompatible with Vista and particularly Windows Mail.

If you are not using either make sure that no other AV is scanning email
since such processing is superfluous.

Having uninstalled or disabled AV software delete and recreate your email
account within Windows Mail to ensure there are no lingering traces
of AV software interfering.

The try sending mail again and report back to this forum.

Check your settings.

The symptoms indicate the following, (but it could be an AV problem as
suggested)?

Looks like you have not checked the option to include the account in "Send
and Receive", Tools>account>select account>properties>General>check the box.

But you have selected Send and Receive at start up checked,
tools>options>general>uncheck the box.

But you do not have send messages immediately checked, tools>options>send
tab>check the box.

?????????? Crystal ball and beer at work here :-)

Re: Send/receive problem
I've uninstalled Norton and done everything you all said (problems mac
suggested were already done and checked, so wasn't that causing problem). But
original problem is still there. I've discovered that send & receive only
doesn't work when there is mail in the outbox. If no mail in outbox, send &
receive works :/

Yet when I reboot Windows Mail, it sends any emails in outbox.

And when I deleted an email in outbox, it still showed a (1) next to outbox
indicating there was an email in there when there wasn't.

Re: Send/receive problem
Assuming that Norton was uninstalled completely, and no traces
of it remain, it is likely that Norton corrupted that account while
it was installed. Create a new mail account with the same settings
as the old one, then delete the old account.

Linda, try installing the latest download for WM
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941090 See if that helps?
It mainly addresses stuck messages, but you never know?

Re: Send/receive problem
While Norton antivirus was installed on your system, it may have
corrupted your Windows Mail beyond repair. I recommend that
you upgrade to Windows Live Mail.
WLM will automatically import your WM accounts, settings, and emails.
