activation trouble

I recently bought a new pc that came with xp. I installed vista home basic
using an upgrade disk I had used to upgrade my previous pc. Everything was
fine until I tried activating vista on my new machine, it said my key was
already in use which it was on my other computer. So I thought oh well it
should let me activate as soon as I get rid of vista on my old pc. No such
luck. I did a clean install of xp on my old pc elimitating vista but I still
can't activate my vista on the new one. Is there anyway around this or am I
forced to purcase a new key?

An upgrade version is transferrable to a different computer. Just do the
phone activation.
