It really shouldn't be necessary to use the HP Recovery disk, thereby
necessitating the re-installation of all of your applications, as well.
If you actually performed an upgrade, rather than a clean installation
of Vista, you should be able to revert to WinXP:

Yes, you should be able to re-use that Vista Upgrade Product Key at a
later date. At worst, it might fail to activate via the Internet, and
you'll have to make a 5 minute phone call.
